Your Longest OCI with Dino Oil

I used to have a 1978 Toyota Corolla. Got it brand new in the Stone Age. It used API Services SE oil. The owner's manual said to change it every 7500 miles which I did till I sold it in 1998 with about 300,000 miles on it. I always used conventional oil then.

Can you still do OCI intervals like this with conventional oils? I mean SM grade or better.

My buddys dad is crazy with conventional oil. He changes his 1997 Honda Accord using conventional oil at 10,000 mile intervals with Honda filters. So far no problems for them. I wouldnt be that crazy, but then again he does mostly highway driving.

I probably go 8000 miles max with the conventional oil. I can't say for sure. It is depend on your driving, RPM, and traffic..

but yea you guys get good gas over there... I like mobil gas. too bad we don't have it here.

Hmmmm the longest I have ever run conventional oil is with the same oil inside my 1996 Toyota Tacoma now: Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w40. I went a little over 8000 miles on it. I drove from west coast to DC and then back, which was why I didn't change it sooner. Didn't have the chance to do it OTF. I kind of got carried away I guess.

But yep, no problems. Mostly cruising at 65 - 70 mph, except for the occasional restroom breaks :] haha

OP, your questions seems weird.

If you've been doing 7,500 mile intervals as per the owners manual for 20 YEARS! i beg the question, what happened in 1998 after you sold the Corolla?

Seems like you were abducted by aliens and kept hostage only to be put back on earth 13 years later not knowing how long to run Conventional oil in today's modern cars.

What oil and what service intervals have you been doing all these years?

I've got that friend who does 15k mostly highway miles with Castrol GTX in his mid 90s S10, and it has like 400k miles on it with sludge in it.

That's a bit extreme. Accords in those days were spec'd for 7500mi if all highway miles, or twice as often for severe service.

Just did a 9,100 mile OCI on Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 (with a top off qt of Formula Shell and Pennzoil Conventional).

10k might be possible in the summer, but probably not in the winter.

My Mother in Law's Toyota Corrola I just found out has had the same oil in it since June 07 I am guessing. She has put a little more than 2000 miles on it since then.

Sorry - I gotta point out something with this.

Back in the late 1970's until the late 1980's you would have been using group-I oils, that tended to have poor oil volatility. Combine that with the fact that most 1970's cars burned oil, you most likely had to top-off that engine every 500-1,500 miles.....so you would have added 5+ quarts of oil in an OCI.

The longest OCI with dino in LS400 was about 7-8k miles few years ago, the longest OCI with syn was 15-16k miles. The engine has no sludge just some vanish from a look at the fill hole.

I got a 1998 Camry and then a 1996 Avalon. With the Camry I mostly just used a dealership for the oil changes. Then I got interested in what oil is all about.

More or less. It would go through no oil to speak of for the first 4000 miles but the last 3500 oil consumption would step up to about a quart every 1000 miles. But that little Corolla would run like a top. It had the 3TC engine I recall. 4 cylinders.

I used to change the oil in my '75 Vega once a year when I was going to college. That would be ~12k miles. This was with SF oils, if I recall correctly.
