Reusing Old Engine Oil

Absolutely, positively 100%.

Long story short, we had new, top of the line (at that time) vehicles, and an old beater truck. I would carefully drain Mobil 1 out of my good vehicle and drip filter it, then pour into the beater for another 5000 miles. Worked perfect for years, and saved a few tight dollars (at that time) along the way. Using Mobil 2 is a great resource conservation, too. Just keep the oil clean during the process.

I used to own a 1976 Plymouth Volare with a Slant 6 that used a quart of oil every 600 miles. I used to drain the 20w-50 out of my Harley
and pour it right into that Slant 6. That slowed down the burning a bit. So yes, there is a time and place to use old oil.

Burning oil aside, that Slant 6 was virtually indestructible.
Before I brought it to the junkyard, my buddy and I jammed a 2x4 onto the accelerator pedal and stood back waiting for it to blow up.
After several minutes we were disappointed when it just whimpered and shut down. All it had done was overheat. We waited for it to cool down and it started right up no worse for wear. Drove it to the junkyard and it ran just fine. Had the rest of the car not been such a mess, I would have kept feeding used Harley oil into it for many more years.

Anyone here do it? And if so, how do y'all go about it?

I have a friend with a 2009 Corolla with near 400,000 miles on it, but burns oil off the wazoo. It appears to be ~2qt every 600+ miles. I don't know her driving habits, but she usually waits to refill it until the "genie lamp" comes on.

I, on the other hand, do OCI every 3000mi and use full synthetic. Would it be okay to give her my used oil to burn? I've ran two BlackstoneLab tests and both results came back nicely and they suggested a longer OCI interval for me.

At that level of consumption it’s basically a two stroke!

Yep- I've recycled a lot of used oil. We used to put it in old plow trucks or very old equipment when running low on occasion. But these engines may have had oil from the Nixon Administration.

My uncle collected "good" used oil to give to the home nurse that took care of my grandmother. She was paid peanuts and was driving a oil burning Toyota as well. I offered to service the car for free, but she insisted that used oil was fine. Ran for years on our old oil. She was paid so little that she also collected cans and bottles for the deposit return. She would accept used oil, cans and bottles and small offerings like lunch, but never accept any other help. Even returned a cash Christmas present if I remember right.

Great lady. My grandmother and uncle have since passed, but she still visits with my aunt on occasion.
