1996 Toyota Corolla,170K miles

This is my 24 yr old sons car.He drives it 124 miles round trip everyday for work.He does seem to have a heavy foot and the engine burns about a qt of oil every 1K miles or so.Can anyone suggest a good weight oil to use?We do 3-5k OCIs.

That's common on older Corolla's with that many miles it seems in my experience.
With that daily mileage and short OCI period, I'd go buy the cheapest gallon or larger jugs of house brand oil you can find.
If you're willing to try to slow it, probably Maxlife or any other high-mileage oil.

We are currently using Super Tech 5W30 and Super Tech oil filters.Would 10W30 be a good choice to run? And,asking a 24 yr old to slow down......

Walmart 10W30 in the 5 quart jug. Corrola's valve guides seem to wear and cause the consumption. Since you are adding make up oil I would go 5K OCI's.

if it were me, in your conditions, i would switch to super tech 10w40 and monitor consumption. Cheaper and a little thicker. may help the consumption.

I was just up at Walmart and Super Tech jug is $10.88.His last oil change was a Valvoline special from AZ for $18.00 with a filter. If Walmart has Super Tech 10w40 i'll try that.
