Just purchased a 95 T100 4x4 with 207,000 miles. Auto-Rx with basic oil vs. Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 vs. Mobil 1 High mileage 5w30

Working on cleaning up the automatic transmission on another thread.

I used Auto-Rx in the past on my 93 Civic to try to fix the rear main seal. Didn’t work so I resorted to Bar’s Leak rear Main seal product. This car blows tons of oil out the rear main seal and yes the PCV valve was clogged way back but not now I think that is what did it.

I’ve used Auto-Rx on my V6 3.0 91 4runner and the best I can tell no problems or major consumption issues. Just not driven much due to poor MPG frankly.

I do have some level of skepticism of Auto-Rx and I have often wondered if Mobil 1 HM or Penzoil Platinum would do just as well on a engine cleanup.

What I don’t want to happen is have seals begin to let loose and leak.

Your input....?

Go with Mobil 1 High Mileage!

Is there a reason for you to suspect that you actually need an additive to clean this new motor? I'd stick with PP or PU if you can get it.

What is PU...?

And rightfully so. +1 on the PU 5w30

Especially when I’ve heard posters say go easy on the engine during cleaning phase......as if Auto-Rx reduces wear protection? This is mainly a business use truck. So it will spend most of it’s time towing a 6x12 enclosed single axle loaded to roughly 1900# on a light day to 2500# on a heavier day.

....yes will be doing a AT cooler and temp gauge. Currently going through the entire trucks fluids and fixing all the nickel and dime issues now.

May just save the Auto-Rx for the tranny ...then again might skip it.

Ironically I already picked up a 5 quart jug of Castrol High Mileage 5w30 for this truck to use for the first change. Then I had my doubts about it....?

Just might be splitting hairs here.

Wally World usually carries M1 HM 5w30 quart jug. I think it was $27-$29 range.

What does the Pennzoil Ultra typically go for per quart...? Wally World carry it?

I'd search the oil additive section, determine if you need a product for cleaning. If you do, I'd skip the Rx altogether.

Well....looks like it's down to M1 HM or Pen Ultra.

Which one is more crank seal/main seal friendly of the two....?

I believe it does work for some....and I still might use some in the auto tranny down the road. Just not convinced it will clean internals any better than P. Platinum, M1 HM or now new to me P. Ultra.....

Currently $24.97 5qt, $6.97 1qt.

Pennzoil Platinum is $24.97 5qt, $6.97 1qt. Same price as M1 HM and regular M1. But the platinum is (supposedly) 1 grade below M1 HM and Ultra in cleaning strength. On par with regular M1? don't know.

M1 HM has "extra" cleaners over M1, and Ultra claims "25% cleaner than Mobil 1". So I call M1 HM and Ultra even.

Im going to throw in an out of box suggestion , Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 syn blend or full syn. Has a good shot of Sodium to clean, Moly for AW purposes and contains seal swellers/conditioners to help with leaks and consumption. Runs really smooth in my sister's Camry ( I know , not the same engine ). It has also helped the techs at the shop reduce consumption/leaks in their personal vehicles.

I have run PU in this engine. It was a great oil and an exceptional cleaner. That said, it tended to thin down quicker than other oils used and ultimately may have caused my valve cover gaskets to leak more than before (the valve gaskets usually are prone to begin leaking on this engine around 150,000 miles and higher).

I'd personally take a look at using Mobil Super High Mileage or Valvoline Maxlife. Both helped with stopping the occasional puff of blue smoke once a month in the morning. When I sold my T100, I was using the Mobil Super HM 10w-30 and I swear I was getting better MPGs than six months before, even using winter gas.

Use a bigger filter such as a Purolator PL20195 or Mobil 1 M1-209 for a larger oil filtering capacity.

The valve cover gaskets are leaking a bit now. That was noted on the used vehicle inspection I paid before handing over the $4,400. Fairly certain the seller lied about the timing belt being changed. Will change those when I check on that.

Valvoline maxlife is what I use in my 93 Civic with 310,000+ miles to slow down the main seal leak. Along with Bar's rear main seal.

I like the idea of the extra cleaning of PU but the worry factor of no claimed seal additives concerns me on a 207k miles engine. Going to go with M1 HM and not.worry about it.

All my vehicles are high miles. The irony is my oldest truck has the least miles.
