Yep. The stupid people were out today

I used to provide IT support for 15-20 small businesses and non profits (food banks, churches).

I should have started tracking all of the stupid things that people did.

The best ... that come to mind

1) We had a $100/hr fee and a 1 hour mininum. One of the lawyers called and said his computer was off. Before going there and charging him, I tried to confirm whether or not he had tried to turn it on. I even asked him to turn it on. He would have nothing to do with that. "It's just not on and I don't know what's wrong with it". Hopped in the car, went over .... Computer wasn't turned on. Easy $100 for my boss

2) The customers obviously had my work phone. One of the organizations we provided support for was a small town about 35 minutes north of the city. I got a call from the zoning clerk, who was VERY drunk, complaining that his home computer speakers weren't working. Well - I provide support for your town not your home. And you're drunk. I'm not driving 35 miles out of the city for this. At that point, I stopped carrying the work phone unless it was work time!

3) The secretary that got an email from the "New York State Polcie" ... yes, spelled wrong ... about a parking ticket and proceeded to forward it to nearly everyone in the office infecting EVERY computer in the office.

He wanted the shop to pay for part and labor to replace his dead alternator, otherwise he would go to police to file complaint.

Someone out there wants to get something free, actually not free but more like someone else pay for it.

Probably related to the guy who used to chase down our drivers (we have a fleet of small trucks and they're often dirty/dusty from being at construction sites) and claim our driver dropped some mud which kicked up and broke his windshield. He wanted a free windshield or he'd call the cops. Turned out he was a brother of one of our employees; maybe he was in on the scam too.

One of the local Firestone auto centers has a negative review because someone's 2000 Dodge Intrepid developed frame rot after being serviced at Firestone ... And since the frame is under the oil filter, it's Firestone's fault.

I see something more dire in what daves87rs posted.

It is the increasing desperation of many folks who are struggling to survive in this increasingly failing economy.

Fact is that most folks incomes are stagnant or are falling and have been for many years now, and it shows no sign of actually turning around, the only people that are doing well have been doing well for the past decade or two.

That economic desperation makes people do all kinds of what seems silly, stupid, and outrageous to some of us.

While there is some truth to this, I see it mostly as a manifestation of the "they owe me" culture where people think someone owes them a free lunch, along with everything else in the world. Gimme, gimme, gimme! If I [censored] loud enough they'll give it to me!
