Yay or Nay

Here in SD, kids can get a learner's permit at 14 where they have to drive with a parent for a certain number of months before getting a restricted permit. Then they can drive alone from 6am-8pm until age 16, when it becomes a regular license.

When I was a kid, I got a restricted permit at 14 by passing the written and driving tests; there was no learner's permit at that time.

State legislatures are the petri-dish of dumb ideas.

Some states (primarily rural/farming/ranching) have similar reduced age laws but I thin kids cannot drive on public roads w/out parent.

If kids need to get to work they can bike or walk.

I got my learner's permit at 15 in CT (2005), they changed it to 16 a few years later. Back in high school it was a pretty common thing for kids to get their permit at 15, then do driver's ed and get their license right at 16 and start a part-time job after school.

I don't really see a problem with it starting at 15, considering there are a lot of rules around driving with a learner's permit. I'd rather people start early and learn properly, instead of being in college and not even have a license. I remember I met someone back in college who was terrified of driving, and since she was graduating and would need to drive to her job she had to get her license. o_O

When I was a kid, some could get their license to drive to work and I think school, at age 15, lots of restrictions. All of which went away at 16. Most of us survived…

Every state is different, and lots of different areas.

I had to wait until my 16th birthday to work at the union shop where my father also worked. There was however, a non-union shop nearby that would hire 14 year olds. In those days, most families in my town did not have a ton of money and most kids wanted to work to get spending money.

Age 16 seems young enough to get a drivers license. Kids shouldn't have to 'commute' to work before that age anyway. When do kids get to be kids? They have a whole lifetime of work ahead of them, and probably commuting too.

I think the maturity varies widely and it’s hard to slap an “age” on it. once the mechanics of driving are good, emotional behind-the-wheel judgement is where I would be concerned. Sooo manyyyy factors there.

No way not a license. I can see a learners permit as where I am in Virginia we can get our learners at 15 and 6 months and license at 16 and 3 months. Don’t think I want to be on the road with a lot of 15 year olds. The people already on the road scare me enough.
