When I started work many moons ago I had a mentor who was about 60. I asked him about the guys who stayed late for no apparent reason. No deadlines etc. He told me "It depends what's waiting for you at home." He was right.

This guy might have cherished his quiet time outside the house.

I used to do it every 3k and now 5 or 6k but i work hard at restraining myself not to do it every 3k again. I think i'm OCD with things like that, maybe not the only one here. Nothing beats the feel of an oil change on a car that's super easy to work on on a sunny day, with a gallon of fresh oil in one hand and a cold one in the other.

Trying to explain why i did 3k change to people who change every 30k or dont even know you're supposed to change oil is like trying too explain what is bitog and why i spend my time here during confinement.

Just make sure when you tip whatever hand that enters product into your mouth, you aren't tipping the oil hand

I'd be more worried if the opposite happens!

Perhaps you're right. My bad. then you have first-hand knowledge some Europeans refrigerate their oils, but not the beer?

Yes we do! And then multigrade oils were born.

He also was obsessive about using only Valvoline or Esso Protec oils - used to buy it by the case when it went on sale.

Hated the Pennzoil we used in the shop - it was ‘watery junk' that splashed out of oil pans because it broke down to nothing in engines. His oils had ‘good body' and would drain out thick and smooth bc they didn't break down.

He lived right next door to the store, and only really used his car for highway trips out of town - 2k oil change on all highway driving!

where did he work at again????exactly....

Had a ocd friend in college who changed his oil every 700-1000 miles. he wasn't that ocd because I think I changed mine in the 1500-2000 range. he was one of the two guys who had a very nice new car. rest of us had much cheaper beat up cars. Small town and not much driving during the week and lots of car projects on weekends. Fog lights, stereos , amps, speakers, repairs, etc. We all helped each other. Two of my other friends used to fight over his oil ... still had near perfect color after 700 miles!

I never had an OCD customer, but there's a Northstar V8 Cadillac that comes every few months to my shop that rarely gets driven. The oil drained looks just as clean as the oil put in! I shined my flashlight under the oil cap and there is not even a gold tinge on anything. It's just as clean as it was when the engine was put together in the factory lol.

No but i have a neighbor who is always fiddling with his john deere riding lawnmower. Changes oil monthly. Spark plug? Monthly. Makes no sense to own it since his actual mowable areas on his lot is <2000sqft. Ive finished mowing my front and back yard with a 120$ bolens push mower before he finishes his front yard. And i have a bigger lot.

I know that guy. It's another John Deere (unrelated to the company) that takes his give name too seriously.
Bring him over a beer someday. He's harmless and a good joke-teller.

Perhaps bc they're OCD or just love the feeling of working on their ride.

I knew a fellow who changed his oil on the 1st day of the month, whether the oil had 500 miles or 5 miles. He always did it after work about 4:30, didn't matter weather conditions or other things. It. Got. Done.
That old 84 Dodge Ram, prolly had the cleanest engine in the south, but he sure did spend alot of money. Still, he never complained and I'd seem him working on it occasionally...big smile while working.

If you have driven 3,000 miles since the last one, why not?

Did he also only use 30 weight non-detergent oil

Yes one time about 6 years ago or so an electrician was talking to me about his ram half ton truck and how much he liked it, he went on to mention that changing the oil every 3k miles was ridiculous, he changed his ever 1.5k miles. He was an older guy.

I think he uses it as a status symbol tbh.

I come from a childhood of push mowing 5 acres weekly of florida grass. So it just dont make sense to me.

Anyway to the OP, I also know people that go hourly versus mileage. 200-250 hours and its drained. Doesnt matter if its only got 1000 miles on it, drained. Although these fleet vehicles and ubers etc have tons of idling time
