So apparently GM cars need to use "Dexos1" approved oil. I have been running Motorcraft full synthetic 5w30 and doing oil changes every 6 months (about 6,500K miles) and the oil life meter never reads south of 35% before I change it. I don't think Motorcraft is Dexos1 approved, is it? And did this damage my engine?

Even if its not Dexos it didn't do any harm. Motorcraft is a fine oil. It could affect your warranty but that's about it.
You didn't hurt anything. Its a top notch oil

You should be fine. Just switch over to the correct spec on the next OCI. No harm should be done. If you have a warranty claim, it shouldn't be oil related anyway. No need to lie, but no need to tell them if you are not asked about it. In a warranty claim situation, I would simply say I did all the required oil changes with the required weight and filter.
What's it in? Only the newest cars take dexos don't they ?
MC is a great oil, you did absolutely no harm by using it. It's not dexos approved, but I'd guess it would meet the requirements if they sent it in to be tested. However, I highly doubt that Ford is going to send their oil to GM for testing and pay them for the licensing.

I would bet that Motorcraft semi-syn could pass dexos1 testing as is, or could be very easily modified to do so. After all, there are some dexos1 synthetic blends out there. So, using the synthetic as you are, I wouldn't worry. However, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting to see a GM trademarked dexos1 logo on a bottle of Motorcraft oil.
If one were intentionally avoiding actual dexos1 licensed products, I suspect that the Motorcraft would be a very good choice. By the way, do a Canuck a favour. The only specs I have seen for motorcraft motor oils are Ford specs.

Yes; my local Buick dealer says they use AC Delco's synthetic blend for their customers' changes, and the bottle reads "dexos1."

The only reason Motorcraft is not Dexos approved is because it is Ford's OEM oil. It would make sense for Ford to opt out of a competitor's oil specs, and rather focus on Motorcraft as THE "go-to" Ford oil.
Motorcraft is absolutely a great oil for your GM vehicle. Our family has a Malibu that will only see Motorcraft 5w30 throughout its entire life, and the engine is perfectly fine at 90,000 miles.
