Friend of mine dumped a couple cases of SL QS 5w30 dino off on me as his fleet no longer runs that weight.

He thinks it's maybe 5 yrs old or so

So would you run it 3-5k OCI or send 'er through the waste oil burner?

I'd run it.

if you car is older by a few years, that may be what it required from new anyway. I.E your 01 Durango.

Yes, I was considering running it in the Durango.

My main concern is that I bought it ~6 mo ago with ~120k on the clock and questionable maintenance by previous owners. With the 4.7 rep as a sludger, I'm running GTX for it's cleansing ad-pack.

Do you think this QS has a decent ad-pack or moly in it?

I'd run it.

Wal-Mart sells SL oil new on the shelf for older cars. They're not going to notice the difference.

In my API SE and SF engines I'd use it. In fact I have about 10 qts of Havoline API SL oil I use. No worries at all.

I know Johnny said it has a good add package.as far as the moly, not sure about that. I would use it.

Alright, thanks for the replies. I think I'll run it 3-4k OCI

Well, my current fill of GTX is almost done and I'd like to take some sort of step to do some clean-up. I'll do some research and maybe do an add of Rx or seafoam or something x-miles before a drain, then fill with the QS.

I'd like to get this truck to 200k. And, while I don't have solid proof there's sludge issues, I've got a gut feeling things are nasty in there. That's the reason I'm keeping OCI's short (3-4k)in an attempt to clean things up, and why I'm concerned about using good oil with good add packs.

I wonder if the thread starter was more concerned that it's the SL-add pack generation of oil? or the age of the oil? But I know his SVT (nice car BTW, I was looking hard for one of those) was hatched during the SJ era, and the Durango was close and might call for SJ-rated oil, even SH-rated oil...

I was equally concered about both the actual age of the oil and the SL generation of add-pack being sufficient(cleaning, anti-wear agents) for use in my Durango with a questionable maintenace history.

Thx about the SVT. It's been a fun car to own. And there's no questionable oil maintence history there, lol. I've had it since it was 2yrs old/ 20k mi. M1 5w30 w/ K&N, M1, or fl-820s always!
