There is a reason for this we do not think it is worth the extra cost of any another quailty syn PCMO. I can get AMSOIL, M-1, PU, PP, QS UD, Synpower, Castoral SYN, Kendall Syn, MotorCraft syn, and Napa Syn for less than RP normally. Don't bring it up that RP says it may be used for 15,000 miles. All the PCMO's that I mentioned may be used for 15,000 miles under the right conditions. I understand the RP has to cover marketing cost and it is not one of the big sisters in oil industery, but I do not think it should cost as much as a niche oil as Red Line.

RP seems to be a red-headed stepchild.

Check out how M1 and AMSOIL are defended!

RP is very very god a bit on the pricey sde but a lot of people here REALLY like it!

(Oh, and those reasons arent all that good. Seems AMSOIL and Redline arent in stores. The other ones are, but are formulated differently, for sure, for mass markets.)

No doubt! It amazes me how otherwise intelligent thought processes takes a nose dive here at BITOG when RP is even mentioned. RP is blamed for anything and everything under the sun, and now is blamed for what a RETAILER priced it at.

What has RP done to generate the intense hatred within BITOG? Anyone? Mindless. Just mindless.

I think that with that RPOw40 they are actually charging for the better base stocks and additives and that it cost more to produce than their 5w30.(which is usually about $8.50) A big player like M1 just spreads the cost out. Just my guess though.
I bought a good 2 year stash of the RP 5w30 with the AAP 40% sale. Got it for about 5.50 a quart.

Has nothing to do with hatred...I won't pay $11.99 a quart for ANY oil. This has nothing to do with the fact that it is Royal Purple.

Me too. The highest I paid for syn oil is Pennzoil Ultra 5W20 at $3.20/qt. The average cost of others, M1, PP and Synpower, was about $2/qt after rebates.

I would not pay more than $5/qt for any oil, Royal Purple included.

The RP is 1/2 again as much as the M1 0W40 at $8 and the M1 generally sells at Wally World for under 7 bucks. So it's hard to see why you included it in your comparison, especially in light of the UOAs that have been posted using the M1. One of the first few responses to the OP was to use the M1 instead. In light of the price comparison, that seems like sound advice

If people want to run this oil, let them run it. This kind of oil (and others like it, Redline 0w40, Mobil 1 0w40, Euro oils, any other 0w40) are not for the average vehicle.

M1 0w40 at Walmart for under $7/quart?

for starters, i dont understand why anyone would NEED a 0w40 oil unless you lived along the arctic circle. secondly, the 0w40 oil pricing is the same as all the other oils as far as i can tell from everyone I have looked, with a few select places, for instances, oreillys, who are savagely raping people with the price.

for me personally the only number that really ever matters to me is the second number, as that number is gona make the most difference during driving or beating on your car. Seeing as how I am constantly racing my car i stepped up to a 5w40 oil vs the factory 5w30 rating. Even though the 5w30 probably is enough, i just feel personally more comfortable with a slightly thicker viscosity oil for the strip.

the RP hatred on here makes me laugh because every test on the web has proven that RP is what it claims to be, from the HP increase tests, to the oil break down tests, to the wear tests when people disassemble their engines. Every person I have seen on here that hates on it starts their sentences with "well i havent used it personally but". I chose royal purple in my car because of the good reviews I have seen on the web, but also for its ready availability at 90% of my local stores. Their automatic transmission fluid has been fantastic in my trans, and their motor oil has made a world of difference in my engine. I dont just stick to one brand of oil and sackride it like crazy either, I personally recommended Amsoil for my brothers mazda speed 6 and i use valvoline max life, valvoline synethic brake fluid, and valvoline synthetic grease on almost everything else.

Oh and as an added note I have also seen mobil representatives claim that the bearing test that royal purple is known for using as an advertisement for their oils, is not an accurate representation of engine conditions because it is not a high pressure environment. I personally find that HILARIOUS to say the least, as an engine is just as high pressure metal to metal contact as the inside of a transmission, especially in the head where the camshaft constantly contacts the valve lifters with incredible force.

I wouldn't pay 11.99 for ANY oil unless they ALL cost 11.99 a quart, and even then I would be plagued to no end.....

Our Walmart doesn't always have the M10W40 but they generally have it. And when they have 0W40 it's the same price as all the other M1 grades which is just under $7 per quart. It's what I run in my Volvo and consider it a real bargain.

Similarly, its $8,49 for 5W-30 OR 10W_30 at Walmart, and again, im wondering if even THAT ids good.. but id likely get 0W_40 LOOL

Interesting question, really. I can get RP 0w-40 for about $1.50 cheaper than the price you mentioned, and that's here in Canada. I can get the other grades for around the $8.50 mark, too.

In Canada, the price you mentioned (or the one I get) aren't out of line for a good synthetic that's not on special. For the American market, I'd say, however, that it's too high.
