This is your statics? Most of the guys I know who have a 3/4 ton tow something large that you don't see day to day. Like me. I bet they need it more than you expert static taking allows others to believe.

I have been blessed and I am able to afford a few daily drivers so I don't have to drive my truck everyday. I would bet 95 percent of the folks who end up with 3/4 ton tow a TT or some type of car trailer. It is nice to have big brakes, tranny and frame when towing.


I'm not sure what the intent of the post was. Most half tons are rated for around 1,500 pounds though. A 3/4 ton would handle it better, but for the occasional need the half ton should handle it for less cost per mile. I'd have to say, a lot of the trucks I see are being hardly used up here. They tend to get sized for the owners most extreme need, and are lightly used otherwise. Their choice, they are free to do it, but sometimes I wonder, what is wrong with downsizing the trailer/etc? Wandering off topic there, sorry....

Speaking of which, why not haul 61 bricks at a time, and do two trips? Should be cheaper than a delivery fee. I drive by a couple of HD/Lowe/etc on/to work, just trickle them home.

What was the intent? You laugh at people driving a 3/4 ton. Why? Are you better than them? Do you know their situation. None of anyones buisness what they drive. They pay for gas, higher registration fees, and the maintenance.
None of your buisness what size trailer they have. Sometimes the people on this board drive me bat .... crazy with their holy then thou attitude.

Lay off the 'tude. I was defending one's right drive as they wish--did you miss that bit? Heck, I have a half-ton to pull my popup; if I point any fingers it's back at me too. Anyone with a single vehicle is better off than about half the world's population (and yes, I made that statistic up too).

I merely pointed out that a half-ton will move 1,500lb, it's w/in spec on a lot of the trucks these days. Or will we start arguing that if you use a vehicle occasionally near it's rated limits then you're being stupid/foolish?

Fine, I went off on a tangent about wondering if one really needs to go whole-hog on such huge travel trailers--but I did say "their choice" didn't I? Fine, I apologize for questioning. Wasn't my intent, I wandered off. Sorry.

My point and take it how you want is that of all the boards I frequent this one has got to be the worst for the Holier than thou attitude. So I pushed back a little this morning.
 
One thing I love about my MDX is the trailer hitch with 5000lbs capacity. Uhaul down the road rents trailers for $18.

I purchased a $3 ball hitch for my lawn tractor to then move things where I want without destroying my lawn.

'tis ok. I get the same way sometimes too. I stopped coming here for a while, when it was a bit much for me.

I think it was more of a response to the guys driving pickups, that laugh at guys using cars for "pickup jobs".
I got a few good natured comments when loading up the Neon at the farm supply or lumber yard, but I just laughed along with them. The odd time I'd point out that it was hauling as much as their truck, if they were only buying a few bags of feed like me.
I don't really care too much about what people drive, or what they think about what I drive, but I think the "gotta have a truck" attitude of some guys is a bit funny to me, but I'd never comment on it in person. Its their money/choice.
Who knows, if they ever make trucks that are half fuel efficient again, I might get one.

Whoa whoa, I rubbed a few the wrong way.

My point being that people take for granted what a 1/2 ton can do. Most underestimate their capability once they see it squat down to the relief spring.

Don't get me wrong, if I could afford it, I would drive a Superduty everywhere.

Would a 3/4 ton be nicer for a 10,000 stock trailer? Sure it would. But for occasional use, a half ton is fine as long you're not trying to drive down the interstate at 80 mph, pass cars left and right, or just plain drive without a care in the world like there isn't a ridiculous amount of weight behind you.
 
I used to drive a SD everywhere. Used it to the hilt, too. Now I don't. I drive a Prius C everywhere, the SD for truck stuff, and the Z28 for go fast stuff.

But I don't get upset when people see me drive an empty truck and only me in the cab. Who cares what they think. Screw 'em.

"Gotta Have A Truck-itis" is no different than GottaHaveA (60" TV, BMW, Caddy, Hot Wife, Smart Kids, expensive house, abs, the latest, the greatest, the most trendy anything.

Or maybe they just like trucks?
 
I worked at Lowes years ago when I was in college and I loved watching morons try to load their vehicles. Most were way overloaded or loads were improperly secured. I'm really shocked their are not more accidents because of this.

Most peoples idea of securing 8ft sections of fence to the roof of their SUV is to have the wife reach out and hold it on one side, than blast down I95 at 80mph.

I build a lot of houses and have no issues with a half ton truck, very rarely do I wish I had more truck.

Why?

Because I get what I need delivered to the job site. If by some chance I need a lot from Lowes say 24 sections of fence, I have the Lowes Amex and make them delivery which they do for $20. Paying them a few times per year is cheaper than buying more truck, and its more time efficient.

Overloading is also a real liability issue.

A competitor of mine was sued out of business recently after a simple traffic accident. A sharp attorney had his truck weighed and determined it was overloaded. This reduced his insurance company's participation and he was forced to close down and pay the claim PERSONALLY!

If your vehicle is overloaded or you even have the wrong tires on it you can get hit in traffic and lose a lot. Just something to think about.
 
i was driving I-15 from LA to Vegas and was following a pickup truck with a pallet of bricks. i was about 100 yards behind him. looking at the truck swaying and swerving on the freeway, i knew it was bad news.

He was in the far right lane, so i went to the left lane. I saw the bricks fall out as one mass on the freeway going 60mph. the cars behind him did not have a chance. it was literally hitting a brick wall. I don't know what the ending was as i called it in to the police, but someone i am sure got killed or hurt pretty bad.

when you are overloading your vehicle and driving on the road, its not only your life on the line, but others also.
