Bleeding the clutch slave cylinder under my MG I had neglected to put on safety goggles, and while I was under it the hose slipped off the nipple, flinging some brake fluid into my eye. Hurt like heck, so I grabbed the can of brake fluid as I ran to the kitchen, flushing my one eye with water while reading the label with the other eye, and seeing where it says "In case of eye contact, flush with water and seek medical attention". Oh boy. Called the poison control center to clarify if that really meant get myself to the ER right away, but they assured me that flushing with water for several minutes would be sufficient, unless things get worse. Eye was red for a couple hours but no problems after that. I don't work on the car without safety goggles now; even the rust flakes and dirt falling off the underside can get in the eyes.
Pulling the engine out of the same MG to put a new clutch in it, I was using a come-along to hoist the engine. Bad idea. A buddy of mine was letting the engine down slowly, and I was just about to get the stands to put the engine on when the cheap come-along let go of both ratchets at the same time, dropping the engine about 2 feet onto the concrete. Narrowly missed my foot, and the only damage was flattening one corner of the oil pan slightly. Fortunately, this was coming out of the car and not going back in, but I rented an engine hoist to put it back in and threw the come-along in the trash.
