WORLD CUP 2026 THREAD

Not anymore! 🤣

CR7
Croats playing out of their heads
What a game... :)
Just looking at Ronaldo changing face expressions was priceless.
The Croats played very well (I expected to lose much easier) but killed themselves by not knowing how to place themselves in attack and always had been at offside - so pity for professional players. 3 Croat goals taken down because of offside and yes—there were offsides.

1-1 now. Great match.

I’m not a soccer guy at all, but I’ve really enjoyed the World Cup. I’ve watched more soccer in the last couple of weeks than I have in my entire life.
Ive only watched soccer during WC’s. Started with 2014 and that’s because it’s on broadcast TV and during work hours.

The earlier goals taken down, no dispute.

The last one, I'm just not (wasn't) as sure. I just would really need to watch again and again, there was so much going on. The one Croat (15) was clearly offside. But the ball hit multiple players, both sides - all other Croats onside. BUTTT - the rules. And the tech is cool. This is a decent run down:

I know rules are rules but I find the offside rule to be ridiculous. Because one player happens to be a half inch out of place they don’t allow the goal? It has zero bearing on those goals. Silly rule 🙄

Maybe.......any "end goal" sport has such rules. Trying to think of one that doesn't.

I just get hung up on anything that includes intent or no intent. Then rules suddenly become subjective.

These rules will work great with humanoid soccer players of the future.

I worked at one place where they set up a TV and all matches were available. There was one match that was very well attended because the company had a lot of expat and temp workers from that country. Nobody got in trouble for watching for two hours as long as work was done.

I was confused and still am. It’s not like it’s marked, it’s a moving boundary.

In the early days of me watching soccer, I couldn’t understand the “back court” matter. Meaning they can and it’s ok.

It’s not as if defenders can refuse to defend and get the attacker offsides. An attacker who can leak out on his own controlling the ball isn’t subject to offsides. Offsides only applies to forward passes.

The offside rule gets rid of cherry picking and long kicks trading goals back and forth. It totally works, but the last offside for Croatia was a head scratcher. It looked like the offside Croate player was continuously offside from the first kick on the far left, but the Portuguese player did hunker down and had the ball go off his head. It was totally a decision by the ref if that hunkering was used to intentionally hit the ball or it was an accidental header. Renaldo is a douche.

Yes, you have a point and think you're right. This guy explains why by looking at ball's sensor which indicates whoever touches it:

It's not a silly rule. It's made to avoid planting the ball anywhere behind the back of the defenders and then that attacking player is 1:1 with the gaolie and most likely every one will score in that situation. In that case we'll end up with basketball results involving two figures of goals and it makes the whole game pointless and less interesting.

Once the rule was established any attacking player behind the defense of the opposite team counts as offside, even if he's a 2" ahead of the defenders (it counts like behind their back). 5-10 years ago that was solely call of the side referee-flagger (I think those guys should have head cameras as the main referee) and then approved or argued by the main referee. Nowadays they use computer graphic (supposedly based on a video replay) to show the offside. And of course they have high chances to manipulate that CG, depending on politics and favoring particular teams.

However, giving the chase to the referee to stop the game and look multiple times at a video replay of controversial situation (which also is part of VAR) is priceless and helps him immensely to makes the right call.

Again, I’m not knowledgeable by any measure, but I think it could be better if once the ball is inside the box no offsides. That may be a terrible idea but just a thought I had
