Hi, I work at wal-mart. Is that something you would be proud to tell people? I work at a wal-mart warehouse, and they make us exercise at the start of the shift. They call it a stretch out. It seems like we all get treated like childern working here. For added fun, we also do wal-mart cheers. Give me a W give me an A...... Have you ever tried to get promoted? At wal-mart, you have better read the sam walton book, now get this, "made in america". You will be quized on what you read in the book during the interview process. Am I wrong to think bad about my employer?

Unfortunately it really sad. The exercise at the beginning of a shift: thats actually really smart and a good thing - people dont get enough activity these days, and especially if one is trying to get something out of it, theyl probably benefit in flexibility, joint health, etc.
The cheers and all else is ridculous. Of course those wal-mart managers probably think all their workers are uneducated trash, and using such stupid 'building' exercises, like a wal-mart cheer actually builds pride and enthusiasm that they get treated like crap.
If youre doing well by wal-mart in your job, good for you. If they treat you and your co-workers poorly, shame on them. I personally wont buy anything there except motor oil, which I figure probably is one of the lowest profit items they have there anyhow.

I LOL everytime I think of Walton's book title. It's actually the perfect title considering how the US, and the world for that matter, really works. Like George Carlin says, the number 1 product, item, thing, notion sold/marketed in the US is bull#@*#.

I used to work for Walwart in 1988 before I joined the Air Force. Are you embarrased to tell people that you work for Walmart ?? If I still worked there, I would be proud to say I work at Walmart. The cheers are silly. They probably want people to stretch to lessen the work related injuries, especially if they are lifting heavy boxes in a warehouse distribution center. There is nothing wrong with a company quizzing employees about the company they work for and that includes the Walton "Made in America" book.

Only you and your God define what you should think. Don't let other people decide this for you. If you want to be rah-rah with your employer, then do it, if not then skip it or move on.

Don't ever be ashamed of where you work (provided it's legal). Do your best at what you are doing, and be proud.
If you don't like the brainwashing, double standards, management lies etc, then find a place that will appreciate your efforts, and do your best for them.

Like Pablo says don't sweat the small stuff. I work at a trucking company now with a guy I have known for about 35 years. The other night I saw him get his butt reamed over nothing other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He looked at the guy like the horses butt he was and walked off. Latter I asked him about it and he said that "he don't sweat the small stuff and it's all small stuff". Pretty cool out look if you asked me.
Earlier that evening I was ready to feed an ol'boy his teeth for saying I was an idiot. He walked up and found the nerve that would cause me to cut his thumbs off. Anywho don't sweat the small stuff and be glad that it all pays the same anyway.

All in all, it's not that bad. I do have to put up with a few things working for them that the average person might not at another employer. But I get paid rather well, and I like the 4,10 hour days tue-fri.
My SIL works at a WalMart distribution center. He is paid very well, medical benefits, company stock, quarterly bonus, saftey award BBQ's. Last month he was Employee of the Month, free dinner for his family. He is always winning a $25-50 dollar pre-paid credit card, free jackets and shirts with Wal-Mart logo for saftey awards. He is getting something free on the average of every 2 weeks including days off with pay. Plus he gets a 10% discount on all purchases including Sale items. Also Wal Mart insurance is paying a large share of a $60K medical bill for my daughters recent hospitalization/surgery. (She had insurance at her work also, WalMart is a Co-pay on this)
He has been there 7 years, and did I mention that he is a dock worker. He has turned down a Supervisor promotion 4 times. He has the pay of his boss, (with overtime) without the headaches, and loves it. They just expanded the center so he is pretty secure in his job with senority and need of the center by WalMart.

Yes stretching and warm-up are good things - especially when the company is paying!
In my previous rant - I didn't mean one shouldn't take pride in their work and accomplishments. I just don't think anyone should feel proud or not proud based on where they work....assuming we are talking about legal legitimate work. I like my job, and the check that comes with it. The pay is on a much different scale compared to the stores. I would bet altough, that most people who have worked at different jobs, will notice the culture working at wal-mart is a little different. I would also be a fool to give up my 3 weeks vacation, which will be 4 weeks in 2 years. I think I started this topic because of being jealous of my brothers job.
I worked part time at Lowe's for about 6 months last year. They also do the cheer stuff. Grade school stuff. I quit because of the rediculous scheduling. There was no rhyme or reason for it, and if you asked, their response was 'It's done by the corporate computer!' You might go to work at 5:30 am or have to work til 11:00 pm, but they jockeyed yout times around so that you couldn't have any routine.....had to check the calendar to see if I worked and what time I worked. If I was covering lunch times, it might be 9 til 2:30, next day 9:30 til 2, then 10:00-3:00, 9:30-1:00. Made no sense, and they were very rigid. I felt I had a lot to offer, but generally was unappreciated.... Most workers felt the scheduling was the worst part of the job, other than the low pay and high expectations.....
If you have such disdain for Walmart and it's daily routines, why keep working there? Obviously you're not forced to be an employee, right? Jobs may be tough to get in your area and you took the job at Walmart out of desparation. If this is the case I'm sorry, but maybe if this is the only job available, a move is in order? Living in depressed areas is terrible. Sometimes it's best to just get the heck out of town before you end up living in a trailer park the rest of your life. (Unless that's what you want, which is fine for some).

My grandparents ask me every time I'm over there what my opportunities for advancement are. Basically none; if I somehow managed to replace my boss I'd have to work 5-8hr days a week instead of 4-10hr days. As it stands, wednesdays at 3pm I'm done for the week!
My folks, love 'em, but are of the school that if you go to college you'll get hired to middle management and be the boss of 30 men... and that's status. My enjoying my work (in a relatively "flat" ie unranked business) doesn't mean that much to them.
Meanwhile my cousins are taking extra years to get through school, going abroad, etc. One is moving to california to become an acupuncturist after being a nanny in New York. Of course my grandparents love the drama and encourage this. I've been punching in the same job 6 years now (started at 22)... that's worth something to me.
To relate to your situation, if you like your hours, or proximity to home, or employee discount/stock purchase plan, coworkers... don't let anyone bring you down. They're probably insecure about their own job situation. With your time off you could be more rested to pursue grand schemes than some others. Some of the coolest people work "ordinary" jobs to allow their minds space to wander and be creative. My mailman when I was a kid was an amazing photographer on the weekends... got gallery space etc.

If it makes it easier to take, the reason for the Walmart cheer etc. is to remind people "You are on Walmart time now, Check your ego at the door, for the next 10 hours you are not Joe Smith working to his own agenda, you are part of the Walmart machine" Think of it as being like Basic Training in the military, a bunch of guys come in from all walks of life, and before they can form any Hierarchy or pecking order they are made to put their (personal) Pride aside and work as a unit. It's a basic work ethic I hope most of us have, But as you proberbly know, somepeople 'Don't get it' or, at least 'need to be reminded on a regular basis'
