Looking for some opinions here:
Vehicle – 1990 F150 / 5.0L V8
Transmission – E4OD
Looking to change my ATF over to Synthetic ATF. Currently, I have done 2 fluid cycles with conventional ATF. The first was with Accel D/M ATF and currently I am running Supertech D/M ATF. My transmission shifts fine, but I truly feel like it could shift smoother and also I’m doing this as part of my complete synthetic driveline fluid upgrade. Syn is going in the engine, trans and diff.
Just as an FYI for those that are curious, the motor oil I will be using is 5w30 PU and the gear oil will be Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90 (SVG). I’m currently getting 17 to 17.5 MPG with my current combination (Pennzoil Hi Mi 5w30, ST D/M ATF and ST 75w-90) and looking to boost my gas mileage as well with the upgrade. I’ve done a few upgrades to the ignition system, so that’s probably why I get more than the 15-16 mpg that I’ve read that my truck supposedly got from the factory.
My ATF choices on the table are:
1) Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF – With the AAP online coupons, this suddenly becomes a very cheap and affordable option. Also, since my vehicle uses more than 12 quarts of fluid, the availability of that extra 1 to 2 quarts of fluid is there without me having to go above the call of duty to find those one or 2 quarts is a factor in perhaps purchasing this.
2) Wolfshead Universal Synthetic ATF – I can get a case of this very cheap from amaliestore.com, however, since the case only contains 12 quarts of fluid, I really think that it might be a challenge trying to find someone in my area that sells this fluid by the quart. This is the one that I originally wanted to use, but the fact that I need more than 12 quarts and being unable to find that extra 1 to 2 quarts somewhere relatively local, that might be a problem. If I could even find it in any city on I-85 between Charlotte, NC and the NC/VA border I’d definitely swing through and pick it up because I travel that route quite often.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these ATFs in an E4OD transmission?
In general, what are your thoughts? I’m trying to be one and done for 50K miles or more regarding ATF.
