Upon my look-up for the Wix equivalent part # for a VW 2.0L engine today, I noticed that Wix no longer recommends the usage of the "51342" filter in this application. It now recommends the usage of the "51393" filter, which is the oversized filter recommended for the VW 1.8T engines in the Passat and A4. The Napa catalog has also been updated as well.

I know that FRAM is still recommending the "PH2870A" in the VW 2.0L application, and ExxonMobil is still recommending the usage of the "M1-205" part #.

Pete: Do you happen to know what prompted Wix to make this change?

Michael,

A minor correction is in order.

Wix #51393 is the standard size 1.8T filter.

Wix #51191 is the oversized 1.8T filter (I'm currently running the Napa Gold equivalent #1191 on my 1.8T)

The biggest difference between the 51393 & the 51342 is the BPV setting.

Wayne,

Here are my findings:

For the longitudinally-mounted, VW 1.8T engine in the Passat and A4, FRAM recommends the usage of the PH3569 filter per the oversized filter requirements of the VW TSB.

For the transversely-mounted VW 1.8T engine in the GTI and Jetta, FRAM recommends the usage of the PH2870A filter.

The PH2870A filter, which is equivalent to the Purolator PL20252 and Mobil 1 M1-205 filter, ALL cross-over to the Wix 51342.

I went ahead and looked up a 03 Passat 1.8T, and Wix recommends a 51393.

On Purolator's website, an 03 GTI 1.8T and Jetta 1.8T BOTH specify a "PL20252" type filter, whereas, the 03 Passat 1.8T specifies a "PL30257" type filter.

Now I'm confused.

I think I can clear up your confusion.

Start with the filter that VW recommends for each vehicle, then see what cross ref's to it.

Now to add to your confusion......I have two Purolators sitting in the garage waiting to be used on my '00 1.8T. One is an L30257; the other is an L40316.

Go figure those out.
wink.gif

In conclusion, here is a list of the filters I have used on my '00 GTI 1.8T:

Fram PH2870A
VW 06A 115 561B
Mobil 1 M1-205
Mobil 1 M1-301
Purolator Pure One PL20252
Napa Gold 1191

"Little Red" couldn't care less which filter I use.

You're trying to add to my headache on a Saturday night, aren't you...

L40316--->51333, so the "super-sized," but non-approved filter.

L30257--->OEM recommended filter for the longitudinally mounted VW 1.8T engines.

068 115 561B--->Oversized filter for longitudinally mounted 1.8T, as required by VW TSB. X-ref to L30257.

06A 115 561B--->Recommended filter for the transversely mounted VW 1.8T engines in the Jetta and GTI, previously recommended filter for the longitudinally mounted 1.8T, cross-references to the L20252.

In conclusion, the L20252 was the filter recommended originally for ALL 1.8T engines, prior to the sludge bulletin. The sludge bulletin required the usage of the larger filter, but only for the longitudinally mounted 1.8T engines, hence the recommendation of the L30257. Since I don’t remember the previous Wix part # recommended for the VW 2.0 engines before they updated the catalog last Monday, I’ll have to check with Gary, who has an older Wix catalog, but I’m guessing that the 51342 was the previous recommendation for the transversely mounted 1.8T. The 51393 is now recommended by Wix for all VW 1.8T and 2.0 applications though.

FWIW, I think I'll use a Napa 1393 instead of the Purolator or M1 equivalent next time as Wix actually recommends the oversized filter to be used in the 2.0 application, whereas, M1 or Purolator do not.

I'm an idiot
banghead.gif
and I stand corrected.

After more research, the Napa 1191 is actually the correct filter for the longitudinally mounted 1.8T, and the 1393 was the correct filter for the transversely mounted 1.8T. There was no change in part #s.

As for why Wix still recommends the 1393 filter for the Passat, I have no clue.

Also, no "PL30257" exists; only a "L30257" exists.

Sorry for the confusion.

So either the 51342 or 51393 will work for a VW 2.0 despite their different bypass valve pressures?
dunno.gif

According to WIX they do
dunno.gif
I can't tell if they are for the same years though. Like I don't see any "Rabbits" in the 51393 ..so that sorta dates the 51342 to when they were on the market.

OTOH ..You do see 2.0 Passats in both ...but "I don't do Volkswagen" ..so I don't quite know when the models were introduced or were no longer offered..like I don't even know if they still offer a GTI anything
