If I purchase a Wix oil filter and a NAPA Gold oil filter, are they exactly the same filter or are they built to different specifications? Does NAPA supply Wix with the specifications they (NAPA) want in a filter? I'm a little confused of the process when companies re-badge the same filters under different names.

As far as I know, they're identical . . . at least that's what a NAPA counter honk - er, auto parts expert - once told me

That is what I notice here too, the premium Wix filters (NAPA Gold, Carquest premium) have the red silicone antidrainback in them. And the media is indeed better, as noted on this chart on my webpage:

Patman, so are the napa golda and carquest premiums any better than the normal wix oil filters or are they exactly the same?

From what I've gathered over the last few days, they are the same. The filters sold under the Wix brand name are the best ones, but Wix also manufactures lower cost filters but those are always under another brand name (such as Bravo up here for example)

That Amsoil chart is very old and the media construction has changed for most of those filters.

Most higher end oil filters will use a media paper that is a mix of fiberglass, polyester ( synthetic) ,and mostly impregnated cellulose.

The Hard driver ( Donaldson) would be my pick if Donaldson wanted to sell to the " automotive consumer". They don't based on their marketing plan. The Donaldson is all fiberglass media.

The Wix Sport truck oil filter had a very good mostly glass media, of course it is not available either.

I was in O'reilly's yesterday checking on some wix filters. I checked #51522,& 51042.
None of these filters had the red silicone anti-drainback valves. Still had the black nitrile rubber valves. I called wix techline and they told me that the 51522 filter has had the red silicone valve since June 29, 2001. So there must be some older production filters that have been warehoused for sometime. I will wait until they finally get the red anti-drainback valves in stock. Has anyone else run into this?

Regards,

Westex

The Wix filters I bought on sale a month or two ago all have the red silicone rubber valves on them. 4 of # 51085(AC pf 13, fram ph 16, etc), 2 of whatever crosses to Motorcraft FL-820s. Installed one on my car Monday afternoon.

I remember seeing those Sport Truck filters a year or three ago, never used one though.
