A few posts mentioned the above wix part number as a possible over sized filter for my 2.5L altima. The car is a 2011 but the QR25DE has been used for a while as some of you know.

the goal is to find a bigger filter than normally offered.

Thoughts/guidance?

If you use a filter other than a Wix (which I like) you don't need to use a huge filter. I Use Oversize but wix' have the coil spring which takes up so much room. I have cut the 51365 (OEM Size) and the PL14612 open and there is quite a difference. I started using the Denso 150-1010 after seeing BarlowC's UOA's (we all have the same engine) and I have been impressed. PM BarlowC he is a great guy. I love wix but I just don't like to sacrifice the total filtering area for the small compartment we have.
Bosch D+ 3323
Mobil M-110
K&N HP 1010
PL14610
He may have better choices but these are what I use.

BTW...Look at the Beta ratio of the 51344 to the 51356 the 344 is bigger but is less efficient.

Not sure what the spec'd size is now, but if it's the shorty 14612(Puro#), the 14610 is somewhat longer and has easily fit in previous year/models. It is what I would use and the P1 PL14610 has ~105 sq in. of media area. The Wix comparable number is 51356.

The Wix 51334 would be similar to the Puro 14459 is wider but same gasket size as 14610. It might? fit depending on width area avilable. Could be a close fit.

Don't know anything about said wix 51344 fitting.

Thanks man....I've heard good things about Denso from a friend who has a Grand National, he says it's a good filter? The denso you're using, is it larger than the OEM/Wix filter?

If you run an oversize filter while still in warranty, you run the risk of problems if the filter actually fails. Nissan will refer you to the filter maker for restitution and the filter maker can deny it for using a filter not cataloged for that application.

Oh, so true! This is the most overlooked consideration of the oversized crowd. In most applications you gain nothing by oversizing oil filters.

Hmmm, the wix site has the 51358 listed as the correct part number for my car. Not the 51356.....
The 51358 is the shorty version of the 51356, ~2.8" vs ~3.4" in length. It's analogous to Purolator 14612(shorty) vs the 14610. I don't know about the 11 model Altima 2.5L, but there hasn't been an Altima posted here that didn't easily fit the longer filter app.

fwiw, the 2010 G37 also specs the shorter filter 14612/51358, but the longer 14610/51356 easily fits.

Ill be trying the same thing soon on both my nissans. The 09 Altima 2.5S and the 09 versa HB 1.8.
The filters I have used so far are:
hasting LF113
Wix 51365
Fram TG6607
Purolator PL14612

I have in stock and yet to try these:
MANN FILTER ML1008
Fram TG7317

yes I am aware for some of the [censored] Fram filters...

Use Castrol 5w30, and valvoline 5w30 in the versa, and mobil one in the AC.

I don`t see any issues as long as the prducts are used for their intended drain intervals. I have used the Mobil one to 5K, but kept the dino oil to 3K...

I am a big fan of Motorcraft and Amsoil filters. I don`t have the longer drain intervals anymore and currently use what`s on the shelf...

True that.
(You might be able to find a sympathetic jury though if you point out that the filter would have failed in the proper application and they'd be paying for some other guy's engine anyway.)
I run a larger sometimes under warranty and expect no issues, but yes you are correct.

Well, the failure needs to be caused by the filter. And, how often does that happen?

And, you have to be a fool to get towed, with a catastrophic failure, into a dealership with ANY non-OE parts, and I mean ANY. Wheres the common sense?

Well it almost happened to me the other day on the VW, but that's because I was being stupid.

(That and the unique regulator location)

But no, I've never had a filter cause a problem or blow up in 30 years of heavy driving except the above situation.
