Wix 51085 Cut Open

This filter was in use for ten months and 6900 miles on a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8L V6.

Since I had problems with a Purolator classic filter, I've come to the conclusion the only way to properly assess a filter is to cut the media from the filter body and stretch it out and hold it up to sunlight. This way you can better see any area of the filter that may have failed.

This filter looks good but it could have all kinds of holes you can't see in these pics.

From the look of the media this filter can be used for another OCI.

Very little visual contamination, further proof of good filters have plenty of reserve capacity beyond what we use them.

Seam seems to have separated slightly at the bottom. Not sure though, just an observation.

You must have used the paper towel wicking trick to dry out the media. Looks pretty good!

Further proof that oil filters really don't do a whole lot... clean oil and a good air filter..what exactly is being filtered out...?

I'm sure it can, the owners manual states that oil filters can be used for two oil changes (15,000 miles). I plan to run the current filter for this length.

Good looking filter! Straight pleats, medal endcaps and very little "wave" in the media. Thanks for the cut and post. Anyone know the efficiency / capacity of the wix filters?

The only difference between a Wix and Napa Gold is the label on the filter. Carquest Blue is also a rebadged Wix.

Wix claims a beta ratio of 2/20=6/20 for this filter but fleetfilter still has the the older beta ratio which is listed as 2/20=15/28. It depends on which one you want to believe
