I generally use a Napa Silver 21085 on my 05 Dodge Grand Caravan. The Napa Gold filter is considerably higher (over $7 vs $3 for the Silver). The Wix 51085 is only about $2 higher than the Napa 21085. How does the Wix 51085 compare to the Napa filters? Would it be considered a Silver or Gold?

Tell your NAPA guy that he is seriously overpriced on his gold prices, 1085 on the west coast I get them for 4.52 and when my buddy is in I get them for right around 4 bucks
$6.09 for a Napa Gold 1085 in Kirkland this week.
Start dealing with FleetFilter or Filter1. The 51085 is a little over $3 through them, the same filter as the $7 NAPA item.
Otis24, I've also got a 05 Grand Caravan I use the Wix 51085 and pay $5 at a local small parts store. I don't understand why you'd pay less for a Napa silver even if the Gold was $5.00 more, that's equal to less than 2 gallons of gas and your only doing it every 3,000 miles or so. I can understand saving money but come on!

Please educate me(?)! What makes the Napa Gold so much better? I just bought a new filter because I am changing oil. I went with the Wix 51085. It was only $5.34. Again, whats the difference between the Gold and Silver, and am I understanding that the Wix 51085 is the same thing as the Napa Gold?

Otis24, I know that the Napa Gold and the Wix 51085 both have silicone ADBV's which is important to most posters here, also the Napa gold and Wix have better media than the Napa silver. Ask the guys at the Napa store I'm sure they have the sales speech down. Seriously though if your spending thousands of dollars on a car why not spend a little extra ($3) every three or four months when you do your oil change? I'll admit I'm cheap sometimes, but not with a filter.

If you are a bit uncomfortable with either the Wix or the NAPA Gold, go with the Car Quest premium filter - they're great, too.

Ditto what jmacmaster said. I found wildly varying prices on auto parts calling from one Chevy dealership to another on the same darned part. I would never have figured that. I got an EGR valve for my Ford F150. Locally, it was about $90. Got one for around $45 at Auto Zone. I always call around on significant vehicle parts.
It pays to shop around for any kind of filter, and for that matter for any kind of car part. About a year ago I bought a fuel filter for my wife's 03 Subaru Forester and it was $21 at the local Auto Zone and $16 at the local NAPA, and it was the same filter, made by the same company. I got a quart of G-05 antifreeze at an auto parts store for $18 last spring and a couple days latter, just for the heck of it, priced G-05 at the local Ford dealership and it was $13-$14.
