Wish me luck. 2014 navigator oil change

Going to do my first oil change in a few years — wife’s 2014 Lincoln Navigator 5.4L. Bought some penzoil platinum 5w30* and a Wix filter. Pulled out the Mityvac extractor but the hose has broken. Guess I’ll be doing it the old fashioned way ;)

Think I should remember how to do it but if anyone has general or vehicle specific help I’d appreciate it.

* was the lowest cost of the name brands
 
I think I did one of these a couple years ago? helping some kid out. Oil filter was way overtightened as was the drain plug; I wound up buying a tap to chase the oil plug threads on the pan. Thankfully no damage but had to get a new drain plug.

You might want to first crack the plug and make sure it spins properly--if not, stop and go out to get a replacement.
 
Well at least you have a chance to get an oil filter with better efficiency than you would likely get at the Oil change shop or Stealer ship. On a synthetic change my cost is usually 1/3 the Stealership cost and with better oil and filter.

I still have all my tools including ramps*, AC jack, jack stands, a pig mat, and an open drain pan.

I’ve been taking it to a local 5 minute place. They’ve done a pretty good job but the last oil change got close to $120.


*iirc I might be able to slide under to change the oil without any lifting needed.
 
Yes you very well might be able to slide under without lifting.

I don't remember these being too difficult, I have serviced my nieces 2007 F-150 many times. Biggest recommendations are be safe and double check your work. And of course check for leaks after it's running 👍
 
If the filter points the same as the 3V, I prefer a cup socket on a wobble on an extension. I'd go so far as to say it's mandatory.

The filter catch tray actually dumps 99% behind the xmember. In time I've learned where to put my drain pan near the front diff cover.

I service an '06 Expy, '07 F150 and two '08 F150s but I don't know if anything changed with the chassis by '14
 
All very good info above ! :) I'll add one thing. Make sure the filter gasket on the old filter doesn't get stuck to the block, then you'll be double gasketing and cleaning up one hell of a mess :(. Smear a little oil on the filter gasket, hand tighten, then 1/4 turn with the wrench. BTW, I did that double gasket thing ONCE. I was in a rush, and never checked the old filter for the gasket. 4 qts on CONCRETE no less. What a mess. Had to buy Muriatic Acid to get all the oil out of the concrete :( Learned my lesson, big time. DON'T RUSH ANY JOB. You will make mistakes.
 
Yep, I forgot the most important thing Donald, the oil filter wrench. Texchappy, you can buy 2 different types. One is the typical " strap wrench". That one is easier to use when you have lots of room around the filter. Or, you can buy a socket wrench cap. It fits directly over the top of the filter, and you use a 3/8" ratchet to loosen or tighten it. Be careful with those. They have to be an exact match to the filter you're installing, so you will have to physically match it in the store. WORST case scenario : you can't get the old filter off the engine. Take a long, thin chisel or screwdriver and pierce the filter until it come out the other side. Righty tighty, lefty loosey ( or clockwise tight, counter-clockwise loose ) It's always a good feeling when you accomplish something on you're own. GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
 
I’ll try what I have (when I find them) before I get down to actually doing it. I know at least one is specific to my MINI and one is probably not what I need.
