A friend in Virginia decided to power his shed with solar, a nice marine battery and inverter. The cost was a fraction of what the electrician wanted for the job. He simply flips on the inverter and the lights come on, the outlets are powered and he can work in there all day.
Although this was a while ago, his lighting consisted of 8 Edison mounts with compact fluorescent bulbs. Stupidly bright, maybe 100W consumption.
