wipers chatter

Duralasts came with the car and they chatter really bad and skip too. Very loud and annoying. I've tried armor all on the wiper blades-that didn't help. Alot of times when I get gas I'll dip a paper towel in the squeegee bucket and clean them. Alot of black dirt comes off and they just keep on chattering.

I was about to try Rain-X, and decided to search here before I bought a bottle and in the rainx thread from a few days ago (the only one I found) and they mention that rainx promotes skipping and chattering! I thought it would makes the windshield slick thus alleviating my problems.

Any ideas? What have you done to counter this effect?

Edit: They only chatter and skip on the downstroke. They always makes sounds no matter what but only in the heaviest downpour are they close to being quiet.

rain-x made my VAG areo wipers skip horribly.

clay bar and polish your glass but your ultimate problem is probably low spring tension on your wiper arm, especially it it's an old car.

why not buy some nice frameless wipers though and try those out?

Skipping can be stopped by twisting (bending) the wiper arm. The wiper needs to flip each time the arm changes direction. In other words the wiper needs to trail the arm. If it does not the arm is pushing the wiper in one direction causing it to skip.
To remedy this use an adjustable wrench to twist the wiper arm in the direction needed to allow the wiper to flip each time the arm changes direction.

From my experience when wipers wear out like the blades start to wrinkle they will skip and make noises. RainX is a similar to a winter wiper blade where the rubber blade is a lot thicker and will resist wear and wrinkling better. My Trico Winter blades have lasted 2 years straight, I leave them on in the summer. And still wipes like new.

I don't think any wiper fluid is going to fix a worn wiper. I'm talking about switching over to a winter wiper blade like Trico or RainX because they are more durable and hold their shape.

Solution.

Like I said, there was a recent thread and some were using the solution and said they were getting chatter. They were pretty demanding about getting the rainx off the windshield to prevent chatter, but it seems to me that the treatment would make the shield slick and cause LESS chatter, but WE?!

thanks Penguin, I will look into bending them. I saw on Autopia that they would stop the wipers mid travel and assess and adjust. I can't quite picture it but got to try something. I doubt I could make it worse, but we'll see.

Hey, the blades' edges were leading instead of trailing on the upstroke, so I bent the blades back a little bit and got alot less chatter. So I went to try it again and pushed the blades into the trailing position and held the arm down for a moment to hopefully bend the blades back in position even further.

Thanks man, cured the problem!

No need for new blades like others have suggested.....they looked fine except for the angle the blade meets the windshield.
