I'm not a fan of lifting the arms up off the glass for long intervals. It just stretch's the arm springs out over time reducing blade pressure IMO.

The springs are always stretched out anyways. It’s not an issue from my experience.

It’s one of those practices where many people make all sorts of theoretical problems, that in practice don’t happen.
- stretched springs
- wind blowing the arms back and cracking the windshield
- wear on the pivots
- wipers not wiping properly after being off the windshield for too long
- snow and ice accumulation somehow damaging them in this position

I’ve heard many, yet it’s one of the best practices for winter that I picked up years ago.

I have had great results with just the inserts....I change them every year...

I see. That's about as long as they last for me. It I use RainX I can stretch it to two years.

Someone (here!) recommended some low cost blades from Amazon. Best blades I ever used.
