Winter finally arrived

Sorry StevieC, cannot feel too sorry for you. We are having a warmer than normal winter and we just are getting over a little cold spell. Ambient in the area was as low as -34 but only -30 at my house. As it warmed up a few days later, the ambient was -20 with a nice -38 windchill in the morning and warming to a balmy -26 windchill as the east wind howled in at around 40-50km/h.

The nice thing when the temps really plummet, usually the wind subsides. A few times I was clearing snow in the yard in a ball cap, sweater when it was -20 with the sun out, no wind. Last year we had a brutally cold winter. Weeks on end of nothing warmer than -20. One morning it was -40 ambient and as we drove the kids into school, the temp kept dropping. My Tb could not keep the windshield defrosted. No wind, well not much but it was into the -50's for windchill. But hey, this nice winter weather does a great job of keeping the hippies and lefties out of the Province.

I wasn't complaining.. Just stating that it finally got here.

I have been in that situation once. It was -35F if I ran the defroster, I could actually watch the temp gauge drop down. I would crack the window until I was shivering, then put it up and run the defrost until the car ran out of heat.

Maybe Ontario California. It's cold this morning -25c (-13F). Van had fun starting even with the block heater.

Local commuter train had door issues and was cancelled.

JC1, my van started no problem with the block heater plugged in last night. How long did you run yours? I have mine set for 5 hours on nights like last night. I'm also running 0w30.

We plugged in the truck, I can only imagine how it would have sounded this AM unplugged. Didn't plug in the Jeep, has Castrol 0w-40 in it, -26C, it fired right up no drama.

Some areas around here got to -20F last night. By the time I got into the car to drop my kid off this morning, it was back to being nice and warm again.

I won't try to one-up with our weather in southern Alberta....

We have had 3 incidents of snow this winter, the former 2 were very short and melted within 2 days. The latest one has been here since Friday...looking forward this week it will all be gone again as we have above freezing in the next couple of days and we will be back into +12C (54F) by Saturday.

not bad eh?

Sounds like your temperatures were/are quite similar to ours

We had snow and rain Saturday night, but Sunday it turned super cold and everything turned to a layer of ice. This morning at 7am it was 7F and with the heavy winds it was a feels like temp of -16F. I decided to try and start the truck around 10am which was around 9F. To my amazement it started, wasn't happy about it, but it started. Now getting it out of the frozen snow/ice (it was parked on the street which it got plowed in by the town) was interesting. Ran some errands and it would never get to temperature though. I need to reinstall my grill cover again apparently...

-12F isn't nice or warm

I might wear shorts outside around 35 F, but below zero is a big attitude changer.

The entire upcoming week will be around zero, with three nights in a row -15 to -20 F. Wind chill might hit -50.

It was a mere three weeks ago I hand-washed my cars in the driveway. That won't happen again any time soon.

You know you're an oil nerd when you look forward to -20 F to see how the various motor oils in the garage pour at that temp.

It's -15c (5F) here today... But it's dry cold so it isn't as nasty as the wet/cold.

Happy to be an oil nerd and I always enjoy seeing cold oil pour.

+1, you can't shovel -15c.

That depends upon one's perspective. While one cannot shovel -15 C (or -40 C), one doesn't actually have to shovel it. A foot of snow is difficult to just ignore.. -15 C is easy, anyhow.

We've had a good winter, but we'll have daytime highs of -24 C towards the middle of the week.

We are getting 15-20cm again today. (Roughly 7-8"). It's cold too. -18c (0.4F)

Glad to be working from home today.
