Im not sure how liberal KS is with the salt trucks, but if its like South Dakota, they see a cloud and there out salting. Best thing to do is park her and find yourself a decent old pickup. Salt is a nasty thing and gets everywhere. Im also not familar with the size of storms you get, but if its over 4-5 inches, depending on consistancy it can be fun to get around, and over that just gets dangerous. In the winter im on call tow driver/emergency equipment operator. my probe let me down quite a few times last winter, and on new years after a good 14 inches dropped , i didnt even try to move it, just had my boss pick me up. for the price you can find a old chevy,ford or whatever, its worth it.

Still considering a pickup if I could find a good, reasonably priced older one. The one I saw on our local sale lot was way over priced from what I could tell ($4,500 for an '89). What's a good way to find one anymore?

Think the plan right now is to primarily drive my wife's SUV when it's snowy out but that still worries me when it's 'clear' except for the salt left over on the road. My son whose 8 says he really wants my car when he's 16. Know a lot changes in that amount of time but it will give me a challenge to keep it in really good shape to sell him and give him a chance to put some sweat equity into it.

You shouldn't have any rust issues if you keep it clean and make sure all the drains are open.

My '94 has exactly one rust spot about the size of the head of a pin on it, and it's on the front lip of the sunroof of all places.

My first, an '89, had tinworm really bad, but Ford had corrosion well sorted out by the '90 model year and it's a non issue after that. Of course the mid to higher end models have been aluminum since the 2004 model year in this market, and 2003 in some others.

There are old Jags around here that seem to hold up with year round use.

A set of quality winter tires should work.

Getting a 2nd car to drive around in the winter IMHO is not cost effective at ALL however preserves your ride.

The thing is how long does anyone really expect to keep a 1984 Jag around anyway.

Well, I don't plan on getting rid of mine. It will wind up with the other cars we've owned and never got rid of when we were done with them.

The kids can sell it for pennies on the dollar when I croak, I guess.

don't drive this car in the winter. if you have to, get snow tires, put weight in the back, and runit it through a car wash with underbody wash every day there's salt on the road.
