This was NOT my experience with MSE on an XP netbook. My netbook never slowed down because of MSE.

Only changes I make after installing Microsoft Security Essentials is under Settings is to change the "When" to Daily. Time to when I may have the computer on, & removed the check mark from "Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use. By doing this the computer will download the latest anti-virus software - scan the computer in the background even if I am using it.

Agreed. Of all the things that can screw with an XP installation, I can pretty much guarantee that MSE is not going to be one of them.

I think a daily scan is a little overkill. My computer would spend half the day scanning and I wouldn't get anything done, but that depends on the number of files on your hard drive.

I've run MSE in instances of multiple AV's for testing purposes and things were fine. That being said I installed MSE today on an older XP home Machine with 512 mb Ram (family not into computers, don't want to update), and performance instantly increased over the McAfee junk that was on there

I think that Microsoft has fixed the auto-update of the virus definitions. Mine has been working for a couple days now.
