Version 2 of Windows Security Essentials has been released but I have noticed that many times it did not automatically upgrade.

By going to the following web site and downloading, it will upgrade. It takes a few minutes. After installing and rebooting it will ask you to update the latest definitions.

I too have noticed in some cases that it does not shut off Windows Defender. Windows Defender should be disabled by default when running Windows Security Essentials.

In short if your are running Windows Security Essentials, make sure that Windows Defender is disabled.
 
I really like Security Essentials. I used to run no AV, but I decided to give this a try and have decided to leave it on my Win7 box.

Runs well, and did catch one website backdoor or trojan once instantly without trouble.
 
I had to manually download version 2 on both of my Windows machines. Since version 1 already had Defender disabled, it stayed disabled with version 2 on both machines. In fact, MSE will not allow me to turn Defender ON while MSE is running. FWIW.

That ninite things looks like a problem waiting to happen...
 
I have noticed the update problem with Version 2 as well. It is a known problem and hopefully will be fixed soon. They had this problem when 1.0 came out and they soon fixed it. It had to do with the updates being categorized as "Important" vs "Critical" or something like that.

I don't like or trust things that install things automatically. Maybe legit, but I think I will install them myself.
 
I don't know what version I got, but i installed MMSE on Sunday-Monday, and now every time I shut the laptop off it installs updates then shuts down. I had as few a 6 updates and as many as 13 updates evry time I shut off the computer.. MMSE is doing something I guess.
I also during the download/install process was asked if I wanted the firewall - I said yes but don't see it. I don't know if I want to go back and install ZoneAlarm again.

[add] I'm computer stupid

The updating is Windows Update. You can set it to manual updates by going to the windows update site and going into the settings section.

Ninite is my 3rd stop (after Windows Updates and MSE) when building new systems. Everything is in one place, and usually updated to the latest version.

I have used the Windows firewall as default when installing Microsoft Security Essentials and have no issues with it. Have seen no reason in running something like ZoneAlarm.

If you must run another firewall other than the default Windows firewall, take a look at the free Comodo Firewall.

It has a lot of features including a Sandbox function.

The web browser Google Chrome will be including a Sandbox Function too for Flash, & PDF files + it will have it's own PDF viewer so there will be no need for Third Party software. First it will Sandbox on Windows O/S then later on MAC O/S & Linux.

Just to the Add/Remove Programs in the control panel and remove it. Never had a problem.

I'm going to leave things for a bit now and see how it goes. When things go haywire, I'll go back on a restore point then go from there.
I hate trying to figure all this stuff, and then when I start to get used to something, it's already or about to be obsolete by then - I'm too slow at this stuff. Now that I'm getting this stuff updated & figured out the hidden icon thing, must mean MS is already working on making Windows 7 obsolete. They do the same to me at work.

Exactly. For windows there isn't anything better. Which is surprising since MS makes horrible stuff.

The firewall it uses is built into Windows 7 and there is no taskbar icon for it. With MSE you should only see a small green castle icon in the task manager tray in the lower right corner of the screen.

Have seen this happen because other anti-virus software was not completely removed. A friend of mine had this happen even though he went to add/remove programs and uninstalled AVG.

AVG, Norton, and McAfee all have removal tools on their respective web sites. Once he went to the AVG web site and downloaded and ran the removal tool, it solved his problem.

If the computer had either Norton or McAfee on it I would also run the removal tool for it even though it was removed by Add/Remove Programs.

Give this a try. It should fix your problem and you should notice too that once done that Microsoft Security Essentials will work well.

This was NOT my experience with MSE on an XP netbook. My netbook never slowed down because of MSE.
