So my windows 10 creators edition desktop with i7-6700k, 16gb ram,950 pro nvme drive with greater than 2000MB/Sec speeds was lagging.

boot into windows was crisp.. but the password box would not pop up for 10-15seconds sometimes. was gradually getting worse. Then when typing the password the characters would lag and not appear in the field for 3-5seconds.

So in typical microsoft fashion the fix for this is hilarious.

Turn off "fast startup" in the power menu

you uncheck the box next to "turn on fast startup"

One boot later instant windows 10 password box and lag free desktop within 1-2seconds

Sometimes just turning it off and back on fixes it too.

I was about to fresh install but no other issues except the login screen figured googling for a few mins was worth the time.

This link describes the fix with pictures.

ok now insert obligatory fix the windows 10 login screen by installing linux comments.

I'll bite to avoid disappointment

Why don't you do a clean install of a linux distribution?

MS has 35 years of creating and selling OS's and reliability for basic services is still a challenge for them?

It is odd people buy a car brand that ends up having such reliability issues and they jettison the brand for 20+ years; not true for OS's; they keep buying the same brand over and over believing "this time it will be different"

Ok, I can sleep well tonight. (how's that)

Well since this is my "gaming rig" and linux is terrible for gaming. Even steam OS has much worse performance than windows on same steam machine hardware.

Also it always seems broken somehow and I dont always feel like googling for an hour and typing commands to fix issues.

Issues in the past, Scanner wouldnt work, couldnt fax, sling does not work. Escort update software does not work, issues with Flash, cant use uplay no silverlight for movies with DRM.
logitech software, ecuflash, Phone wouldnt connect. etc.
Thats just off the top of my head.
Yes some could be fixed if I was a linux "guru" or spent 5-60min googling.

Linux is fine for a business machine usually if you dont have any legacy programs, and basic web browsing.

Oh on the laptop it ate the battery 2x as fast.

I do appreciate it on older hardware and basic web machines.

i found the only solution to the problem is turning off fast boot

this is typical problem and it affected 2 out of 3 of my computers

welcome to microsoft

BTW, my fourth computer runs sun solaris, no boot lag (lol)

Is "Fast Boot" an option in your UEFI configuration?

They, unlike most Linux distros, have had the unenviable challenge of remaining backward-compatible for all of those years, through all of those OS iterations and innovations.

The Linux ecosystem is almost entirely anarchic: they can break everything in order to make something better; without any concerns for obligations to customers.

Now, if you'll pardon me, I just threw up in my mouth a little after defending MS. I'll be in the fetal position under a warm pile of blankets if anyone needs me.
