I am going to purchase a new computer that will be built locally (so I never have to talk with "George" in India again). I am perfectly happy with Windows 7, and the local shop that will build the computer, (and install the OS) recommends that I stick with Windows 7 on this new computer. I read a lot of confusing things on the internet about whether or not I should stick with Windows 7 or move to Windows 10. What do you guys think? Thanks for your time.

Nonsense.
For a home user windows 10 is head and shoulders better performing than windows 7.
I run a corporate network and we have windows 7 for our users. The reason we have not gone to 10 yet is due to some of our enterprise applications won't work yet. We are currently testing it and it has been pretty good so far.
Go windows 10, get a solid state hard drive, and get 8GB of Ram you will like it just fine.
Also, I know it may be nice to support a local company, but what is their track record? Will the doors be closed when you need help with this thing?
I recommend buying a Dell business class desktop or laptop and buying a nice 3 year warranty with in house service. The people you talk to are not in India when you get the good warranty, they are mostly in Texas.

Windows 7 will get security updates until 2020. If you are planning on keeping it online after that point, I'd go with Windows 10. But that is 4 years from now; a lot of people dump their computers by that time. If you are planning on doing that, I'd say it is strictly a matter of preference. I'm getting a new 10 laptop in a couple of weeks, and looking forward to dumping this W7 laptop I currently have. I'm sure 10 has new features, but if you are comfortable with the W7 interface and with the End of Life timeline, you can stay with 7 if you want.

Just personal experience, but I've been using Windows 10 for about 4 months on all 3 computers in our home, and I've had no issues whatsoever. I'm getting ready to replace my aged home workstation and I'll have no qualms ordering one with Windows 10.
As someone who is intimately familiar with all previous Windows OS versions prior to 10, but who has recently begun using 10 after doing the free upgrade from 8.1, I say go with 10. Its UI is much more like 7 than 8.x, so navigating around and finding things isn't a pain like it got to be with 8.x (for those that came into 8.x from XP and 7).
Also, the new Edge browser has supplanted the infamous Internet Exploiter in Windows 10, so that is a plus to consider as well.
If there is some reason that Windows 7 is required in the future, you can always install a virtual instance of it to run from within the Windows 10 host.

Order it with 7. Upgrade it to 10. That way, if you don't like 10 you can roll back to 7.
I vote for Windows 10.
I thought 7 was a great system. I thought 8 was terrible. After testing it on one person's computer I liked 10 so much I upgraded. I just made sure to turn off every nanny and feature in my setup. I like 10, I don't know anyone who doesn't, and people love to rag on Microsoft.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly. I have a similar situation in our enterprise and we will upgrade to W10 in Q4 2016. W7 is good, but W10 is better. I also agree on selecting Dell, we have 20,000+ PCs globally and Dell comes to us no matter where we are to repair the machines. We had HP in the past and they just could not provide the service that Dell does and Dell is usually cheaper.

What are you going to to with this computer? The vast majority of people simply surf the Internet and check email.
I would put Ubuntu Linux on the machine unless you are running Windows only applications. There are a lot of people that "feel" they need Windows when in actuality they don't.
Ubuntu Linux does not need AV, is not affected by Spyware/Trojans/Malware/etc. Not to mention Ubuntu is FREE, what more could one ask for?

I went from 7 to 10 and love it. At first I made the switch on an old system and 10 seemed to run alot smoother, I am now on a new laptop with 10 and am very happy.
