Will Fram 9688 fit on 7317?

I have a 2007 Accord and have been scouring the internet for better oil filters. I have been using the Purolator BOSS PBL14610, and am down to my last one. I’ve seen good things about premium guard PG4612EX, but also saw a good deal on the Carquest Premium 84830, which has since been superseded to part number 85334. I have cross referenced it to a Fram 9688/3593A for sizing purposes only, and am wondering if it would fit on my car. I’ve seen people use 9688, 3593A, and 7317 interchangeably as long as there’s enough room. Not sure how it would work on this specific application.

I have a 8th gen civic that I put a 9688 on, but I had to file about a eighth of a inch metal off the block to get it to screw on.

The 9688 is wider but shorter. Mathematically, I assume the filter media on the 7317 is larger prove me wrong.
Honestly, I have no idea. If it’s smaller there really isn’t much point in switching to that filter.

I know on the 07 V6 the 9688 will screw on, that said, there no significant advantage to using it. I'm not sure about the four cylinder but suspect same as V6. Otoh, on many/most newer model Hondas the 9688 will not screw on because of oil pan restriction/interference .Years ago the Purolator P1 equivalent to 9688 media areras was compared to the PL14610 and the latter actually had more area. Personally in my experience, best to just stick with the 7317 and equivalents. The CQ Premium 84356 all you need.

It would mainly depend on the difference in pleat depth and number of pleats, and the difference in length of course. A shorter but wider filter with more pleat depth could have more area, but only an actual measurement would show the difference.

Honda used to spec the 3593 sized filter, about 15-20 years ago, then later moved to 7317. I thought that 9688 number looked familiar too.... You can also use a 6607. I have nothing against Fram filters but they're done, so you might as well start looking at other options. I bought a couple PG4612EX and they worked fine, like 99% of filters do, but was disappointed to see that unit is made in China.

Stick with 7317 (or even 6607) equivalents and you'll have plenty of options.

Both worked fine on my 03 Accord K24 engine . The 02 Accord 4 cyl. specified 9688 and the 03 K 24 engine specified 7317 last time I looked at a Fram application guide.

I’m looking at those as well. They seem pretty decent for the price point.

Is the bypass/relief setting the same between a 9688 and a 6607/4612/7317 ? 9688 are Hyundai/Kia filter sizes. I know it will physically screw on, but I would just use the correct filter for your car......

The bypass setting is the same for the 6607/9688/7317. The only actual difference other than the can size is the burst pressure. The 7317 is 350 and the other two are 300-310.

From the Fram site, it looks like the gasket on the 9688 is .200 inches and on the 7317 is .281 inches. It is different, but not double the size.

9688 Specs
7317 Specs

From what I remember the gasket on 9688 baseplate is almost double the thickness of the 7317/6607
Any recs for the 7317 size? I’m down to my last 3 Purolator boss filters that I switched to after Fram filters were basically NLA. I’m thinking of going with PG4612EX.

In the 3rd picture of the post above it shows a good shot of the gasket.
