Question about filter applications.

Vehicle is a 2008 Kia Spectra 2.0l

To make this easier, I will only use Wix and Fram as examples, although the other common filters brands I've looked at follow the Wix application.

Wix shows a part number 51334 which is a pretty common filter. Fits Honda's among others.

The Fram equivalent would be a xx3593A filter. However, the Fram application guide shows that this Kia should use their xx9688.

Just to double check numbers, when you cross the Fram 3593a to Wix, the interchange is the 51334. When you cross the 9688 to Wix, it also interchanges to 51334.

A further look down the "Competitors numbers" listed under the Fram website information for xx9688 lists both a Wix 51334 as well as a 57092, but Wix does not show the 57092 as the recommended filter by application search.

When you compare specs from both Fram and Wix, the differences are as follows:

Fram 3593a
Height: 3.39
Relief Valve PSI: 12

Fram 9688
Height: 3.08
Relief Valve PSI: 9 - 15

Wix 51334
Height: 3.194
Bypass PSI: 8-11

Wix 57092
Height: 2.944
Bypass PSI: 14

After all of that background information, Does it make a difference which filter is used? My first choice would be the 51334/3593a because it is slightly taller and is a couple of dollars less than the 9688 filter. It seems that the other main difference between the two style filters is the bypass setting. I am assuming that Fram is using the xx9688 filter for the Kia based on bypass setting, and not filter height.

Am I taking a risk using the 3593a filter on this Kia that Fram wants a 9688 filter on? Is there an actual real world difference between the bypass settings? And if so, why don't the different manufactures spec the same filter equivalent for the same application?

If you are concerned about the Fram filter warranty for their filters when used as vehicle manufacturer recommended, then yes you are taking some 'risk'. Should something happen and the filter is determined to be the cause, you would not be covered by the Fram warranty. The bypass difference would be a minor insignificant consideration.

Interestingly the Purolator PL/L14459 covers/crosses to both the 3593a and 9688 on the Purolator look up.
