My brother's got about 140K miles on his transmission fluid. I know it's nasty. The dipstick looks varnished. Shifting is just fine. But fluid needs to go. I'm wondering if Auto-rx will work on that stuff and clear it up. There is no filter, so I plan on just flushing it out from the cooler lines.

Frank???

Yes, It works better on transmissions then it does on engines in my experince! When you are done with the AUto-Rx they recomend haveing the transmission flushed at some place that wil also change th e filter.

ARX works great on dissolving varnish. However, with no filter, there must be atleast a mesh screen and a magnetic or two inside of the pan. I would at least clean off the magnets. Follow the ARX instructions, in so far as required mileage for cleaning. Using the cooling lines is my choice for change out.
