Why You Should Collect Your Garbage Bins Promptly

It's a violation in our community to leave a garbage can in sight after the garbage is picked up. If its not out of sight by the end of that day its a violation. Same for our last community so anyway, if it was here, then, well, poop is the penalty!

Some places it's a violation to put it out early. Go fig. I looked up one place I heard of that, but apparently they changed the rules to require a bear resistant enclosure. I believe they also put it back to prevent cans from being knocked over by wildlife.

The worst seems to be in Alaska.

Yeah, ours is not before the evening of the day before it gets picked up.

One of my neighbours works long hours, and sometimes overnight. [He's a police detective.] I take his empty garbage cans up to his house and set them by the garage. People have done that for me in the past. Neighbourly thing to do.

Why is this person leaving the trash can to sit curbside for four days after it was emptied? Seems lazy to me. I'd say something to my neighbor if they did that.

The house is undergoing transition. New owners do not live there and they just rented out the basement to tenants. The tenants should have taken it in.
There is a gate in front (the only house on the street with a gate), else I would move the bin away from the curb myself. Next time I walk by I will close the lid, the least I can do.

Those are not the only alternatives.

I lived in Colorado for 2 years. Put your cans out early will guarantee a visit by either a mountain lion or a bear.

The bins in my development need to be removed from the roadside within 24 hours of trash collection. That image the OP shared is probably a result of some protestors making a statement. Also glad to see people collecting their doggy poop. All that being said, I'd never condone dumping stuff in someone else's bin without their permission.

Note: my community supplies the plastic bags and small doggy poop bins along our walkways in the forested areas.

My community offers free bags and has multiple dog-waste bins throughout the neighborhood. Dog owners can grab a bag and then easily walk to the next pickup area or Heaven's forbid - Take the bag to their OWN house for disposal. All of this happens because of the community and engagement with the people living there.

Yes - There are some lazy-a__cretins that live here and believe they are exempt. Not cool. If I see this happening, I usually walk over and hand them a bag and tell them to shape up. People.... Always some bad apples.

For the OP observation, people should not be putting doggy treats in other people's garbage bins.
But it can be easily prevented.

Fortunately, I can put my garbage bin out 2 hours before the garbagemen come and bring it in right after.

I had a neighbor who would walk his dog (late at night) past my house and leave frozen treats for me on the sidewalk.
This was during winter, so I had 1 foot of snow on the lawn.
I knew who was doing it and talked to him, .... he said he would stop.
Well, he didn't stop .... and one night I scooped up the frozen treats and left them on his porch at the front door.
Then he stopped .... why do people insist on learning the hard way?

OP, what’s stopping you from taking 20sec to walk the bin up your neighbor’s driveway and leaving it in front of the garage door? It’ll give you some control over the situation and the neighbor might get the point when they are blocked from using their garage.

You carry it back to where it came from. With 3 dogs someone is bound to drop a deuce on a walk. Our community has dog walk areas around and they're pretty good about using them and we use the container but sometimes they go along a drainage or empty space. I won't let them dump on someone's property or pee on plants.. I'll drop a bag in a garbage can if it hasn't been dumped yet otherwise it gets carried home. People can be territorial and you're in the wrong using their can.

OP, what’s stopping you from taking 20sec to walk the bin up your neighbor’s driveway and leaving it in front of the garage door? It’ll give you some control over the situation and the neighbor might get the point when they are blocked from using their garage.

Yep. Recycling bins and garbage bins get collected alternate weeks. The green organics bins get collected every week. That really helps in the summertime. Doesn't matter in the wintertime since the organics will freeze up and not rot when placed in the organics bin.
Our municipal taxes have gone up about 25% over the last three years and services have deteriorated. Snow removal from sidewalks was a disaster last winter. Toronto has a progressive mayor and the city has priorities, different from delivering basic municipal services.

We could do that with garbage, even when all our kids lived at home. It wouldn't work for our recycling bin though. We fill it completely full weekly.

I make sure to bring my can in soon after it’s been picked up because too many times neighbors have thrown raw garbage into my clean can. I pre-bag everything unless it’s just dry leaves, and I don’t want to smell garbage or deal with flys.

This is my neighbour's bin. Garbage collection was last Friday, so it has been at the curb for four days. Dog owners treat private garbage bins like they are public bins.

This is more of an issue in hot summer temperatures. Garbage pick up is every two weeks, so it is very smelly to have all that poop out in the hot sun for a couple of weeks. In my case, I store the bin on my front porch and would hate to have this smelly mess.

Sorry about that. I figured a trash can is for trash. I also pick up random blowing trash and toss it in the nearest bin. I never thought someone would be offended by having garbage in a garbage bin

My racoons are an organized gang and get through my Chewy deliveries the second they get dropped at my porch. I might stand a chance if they arrive by midday and I get then in by nightfall, but overnight they won't survive. 'Coons get a whiff of that tasty Blue Buffalo the cat likes and destroy that $30 bag in minutes. Yet it's plasticized and not supposed to smell on the outside one way or the other.
I wish they ate the cat litter.

As for the trash - I get promptly chasticized by said racoons if I leave anything outside. Serves me well.

I've been doing some work around the homestead and have accumulated a lot of trash. My neighbors said I can top-off their trash cans if there is room, so I've become a late night garbage dumper! Great fun!
