This is my neighbour's bin. Garbage collection was last Friday, so it has been at the curb for four days. Dog owners treat private garbage bins like they are public bins.

This is more of an issue in hot summer temperatures. Garbage pick up is every two weeks, so it is very smelly to have all that poop out in the hot sun for a couple of weeks. In my case, I store the bin on my front porch and would hate to have this smelly mess.

No lids ?

The can has a lid, but the bin is left open after it is emptied into the refuse truck. If you get home late afternoon after work, your bin has served as the local public garbage bin for a few hours.
Notice the pop can in the photo. That is not even supposed to be in the garbage bin, but the guy who tossed it in figured it is not his problem.

Yep, we just covered how much trash is thrown around lately …
Starting to look 3rd world here …

I'd rather they use my garbage bin than leave it in the street. But the best method is what I do. My doggie poop bag container has a hook I use to hang a full poop bag from till I get home or use the park trash can.

Yep. We rent two and pickup is Monday/Thursday …
Many decades ago, garbage pick up in Toronto, was twice weekly and there was no limit to the amount, within reasonable limits, you could put out. Now garbage pick up is once every two weeks and limited to what your bin can handle.

In the mean time, municipal taxes have increased at a much higher rate than inflation.

Don't get me wrong, I recycle as much as I can, but I won't dig out recyclable bits if my wife or the kids put them in their garbage can. Is it enforced very strictly where you live ?

In the city we lived before, they threaten to take away your recycle bin if there is too much garbage in it (too often). Now, I get that it adds work to their sorting process, but they'd prefer someone NOT recycle at all ? I suspect it was just an idle threat though as in our case, our cans were in the alley and they know very well that other people could put garbage in other people's bins with no real way to avoid it.

That takes too much effort for some dog owners. Why bother when you can make it someone else's problem?

I've heard of some areas where there can be fines for not taking it off the street by maybe 6 PM on pickup day. But at least one place removed that fine since a lot of residents put out the cans before going to work and might not get back before the fines kick in.

And the big thing around here is putting it out early because of animals. I can't put it out in my neighborhood overnight because racoons will likely knock it over and go diving for scraps. But my parents don't have that issue even though they're just a few miles away with similar wildlife. Some places have bears, where there may be rules on how soon they can be put out, and perhaps bear resistant can designs or perhaps enclosures.

doesn't happen in my neighborhood.. but be glad its not on your lawn.

I actually tell any of my neighbors that it's OK to do that. I actually like my neighbors, so I guess there's that. They also don't abuse that, and I don't leave my receptical out at the curb for 4 days.
