I bought an old Nissan for my daughter to drive. It has about 140k on the clock. I went through the service receipts that the previous owner gave me. Pennzoil and Fram filters (along with bulk oil) from ten minute oil change shops were the norm. This thing burns no oil and runs as quiet and strong as new.

I have been agonizing over the type of filter to use in my "good" cars. Sheesh! Why worry?

If the fact that it doesn't blow up before 140k is your only criteria, then don't worry, buy the cheapest possible.

With that many quickie lube jobs I'd hate to see what the threads look like in the oil pan.

I didn't say that it just didn't blow up. I said:

The engine is in amazingly good shape. I couldn't ask for better results. Next time, please read the post more carefully before you reply.

Oh yes, the threads in the oil pan are in excellent condition.

Purolator oil filter and any decent GF3/GF4 dino oil and you will get another 140K miles out of that car.

Not here in the rust belt. . . unless maybe I pour it all over the body at each oil change.

So . . . why worry?

You mean you'll be simulating that commercial where the new SUV passes the old SUV's and they are like (cue Kansas music) "..rust in the wind ..all they are is rust in the wi-innnd ....ah(gh)"

I think what Al is looking for here is for someone to tell him that it is ok to continue using fram filters..

Now where is Michael Wan when you need him..

140k on a modern car is peanuts and 3k oil changes with fram filters will get you there just fine.

The problem people have with Fram is not that they blow up engines, it's that you can get a better filter for the same or less money. So the question is not "why worry?", it's "why pay too much?".

No, I'd rather not have a $4 can full of cardboard when I can get ST for $2.07 or an AC for $4 . . .but if the engine is going to outlast the chassis even with bulk oil and mediocre filters . . .why worry?

I read your post. "Runs like new" sound like an opinion when you just bought the car. My 88 Lesabre "runs like new" and the previous owner probably never changed the oil.

BigAl;

My father has 94 Nissan Altima with 470k on the clock with penzoil oil change at Nissan Dealer from day 1(6k intervals). The car didnt see any filter other than FRAM. My car 92 Nissan Sentra has 110k miles on it. For the first 10 years of its life, we changed the oil in Nissan Dealer with penzoil and FRAM filters, actually my car has never been started from 96 to 99. Just sat there and when I started using it at 99, I drove the car 5000 miles before changing the oil. So the oil inside was 3 years old. My point is not to tell to skip maintenance however Nissan cars are really well built cars and can tolerate abuse, If you are happy with fram go ahead, your car will not die because you are using Fram. Some people in this forum is really picky but for a regular users for us, Fram is good enough as long as you change your oil 4k to 6k interval. By the way, I dont use fram anymore after reading this board, and change my own oil.

Good luck, you may wanna visit Nissanforums.com , Very useful info there.

I have actually had the car for a couple of years, but I just read through the records more carefully a few days ago. Nissanforums has been helpful. No Frams for me either.
