Just compared the prices of the tough guard 9688 and the ultra 9688 and they’re only a dollar difference! What happened? Tg is 9.14 and the cv is 10.97

The difference is $1.83 ... you were only off by 83%.

The fram ultra xg9688 is $9.32 with amazon subscribe and save so it's only a $0.18 difference

The most important thing about oil filters is they don't fail and with reasonable oil change intervals your engines will last a long time with out premium oil filters regardless what the papers say.

The Fram price structure got screwed up a few years ago. It use to be the regular orange can was ~$3.50, ToughGuard was ~$5.50, and Ultra was ~$8.
The did some redesign on the Toughguard a few years ago, no real info on what it was (several stores had a clearance on the TG and the "new" one came out), with a price jump to about a dollar less than the Ultra.
With recent price increases across the board, the TG is not really a good option IMO value wise.
The regular orange can has a silicone ADV and filtration almost as good, and the Ultra (especially the "old style") was only a bit more with features many liked.

A TG7317 is 6.82 and XG7317 is 8.97 at Walmart ... Amazon has a special offer on the Ultra Guard 7317 for 7.96

I checked vehicle fitment. A 9688 fits Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi and Subaru. The 7317 fits Acura, Honda, Infinity, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru ... Perhaps price differential between a 9688 and 7317 is due to the number of filters sold annually.

WM is still $8.97 for an Ultra. Their ST are under $3. What do you want, free? They can’t run a factory for profit and give it away. Most price increases are from pricing opportunity, like car dealers are doing. I don’t look at TG or EG except to find other filters and they are in the line of sight.

XG7317-$8.97-10.99 (Meijer)
Champ Ecore equivalent-under $1.50 at Rock Auto (+ shipping)
The new non-full synthetic, non-wire backed Ultra is NOT worth 5-6 times an Ecore, no way.

It started well more than a year ago; the TG pricing started creeping closer to the XGs. I used to love the TG as THE great unspoken filter bargain. But I think (my personal opinion here) that the actual differences between TG and XG are growing smaller. Both are very high eff; both have silicone ADBV; both rated for an OCI that most folks won't even touch. And with the advent of some of the cost cut aspects of the XG such as losing the wire backed media, that closed the price and design gap relative to the TG even more.

Now, with the silicone ADBV in the EG, it's become my "in a pinch - go get one at WM" filter.
