Why no common sense while driving?

Speeders don't have a right to speed. They pay for the privilege. I just wish we'd start a campaign against the left and middle lane drivers and let them start paying for their privileges of hanging out in the wrong lane. The middle laners are just as bad. Semis usually can't use the left and the middle lanes muck up everything.

You can't pay for the right to break the law...

The issue is that lots of people get tickets going right on red with these things, or when they've entered the intersection legally but had to wait until after the red to complete their maneuver (for example, pull into intersection, wait for traffic to clear to turn left - completely legal but would get you a red light camera ticket).

To me I don't see red light running a a big enough problem that the government needs to spend millions trying to fix it, and screw over a bunch of innocent motorists in the process.

My problem with red light, or speeding cameras is they are used under the guise of safety, but they're real purpose is to generate revenues...

Red light cams are solely to raise revenue. They shortened the yellow(made the intersection more dangerous) at many intersections to bring in more money. The people the RLC are aimed at(right turns, barely running the light) aren't the ones causing the crashes. The distracted drivers that run a red light and crash for sure didn't see the RLC sign. The news ran a story the police released about all the "blatant red light runners." Out of the 20 or so vehicles they showed almost all involved a panic stop or panic stop attempt. People believe anything their master tells them.

Here are simple rules to drive on limited access freeway
1) Don't brake unless absolutely necessary
2) Don't cause the traffic behind have to brake because of your boneheaded move
3) If you want to pass somebody, do it decisively; accelerate and complete the pass as fast as possible rather than passing with 1 mph differential.
4) If your are exiting, move to right lane at least 40-60 seconds before and brake only when you enter exit ramp
5) When you enter the highway, merge smartly, use the gas pedal and match the existing speed in the slow lane and for God's Sake stay there for a while before drifting to fast lane
6) Don't unnecessarily change lanes
7) If you are driving behind somebody, don't try to pass him when you see faster traffic coming behind you.

In short, if drive like a considerate driver you won't cause problem for any body

A few types of drivers I hate:

Left lane hogs going 55.

Right lane drivers feeling the need to ride your bumper (but for some reason will not pass you in the "fast lane".

Door-mat drivers (the ones who let EVERYONE go in front of them, stop at every parking lot exit to let everyone out in front of them, and they always let everyone from an adjoining side street go in front of them, while stopping wayyyy back from said street long after light on thru street has turned green.

This is one that should be a law for truckers...they violate this rule constantly...

Truckers have to that their shot when they can.

They don't HAVE to, they can wait just like anyone else...most of the time the truck passing is only going like 1/4 of a MPH faster than the vehicle he's passing. He could just slow down a little bit and wait until he wouldn't be holding up any other vehicles before he swings over in the passing lane...

My pet peeve is those who go down an exit ramp at 30mph, don't look or plan way back, get to the end of the ramp and then look over their shoulder to see who is going to slow down or change lanes at 65mph to accommodate their 30mph merge. Sometimes you need to pick your gap and accelerate to merge, sometimes you need to floor it.

Or worse, they get to the end of the acceleration lane, and due to a lack of planning, they have to stop.

I'm sure that was something you saw one time. Overall, it's not slow semi trucks clogging up the passing lane. Most of the Interstates are 6 laned around here. Trucks can't be in the left. Chaos still ensues.

Actually, it's something I see all the time. Most of my travels are on 4 lane highways and most of the time it's semis clogging things up...

I don't know why people don't know how to merge. It's not rocket science. It's the responsibility of the person who is entering the highway to adjust their speed so they can merge without disrupting traffic flow on the highway...

I wonder if they even teach that in drivers ed. So many people don't know how that they don't teach their teen drivers either.

I like the cameras! In Germany we also have distance cameras on some overpasses that are placed at random so its never in the same place.
If you don't keep a lawful distance you get a big fine and some points on your license, if you are really close your license is gone.

These regulations only apply to normal traffic flow not traffic jams.
The laws are real simple, don't speed in town, don't run red lights and stop signs and don't tailgate.
On the Autobahn keep to the right (the middle lane is not a travel lane), don't tailgate, don't pass on the right and observe speed limits if there is one.

Speed on the highway doesn't kill, running red lights, passing on the right and tailgating kills. For the A Holes that cant or wont follow the basic rules the camera takes good care of them.
Every day in the US i see 90% of the drivers would and should lose their license if the laws were even half arsed enforced.

One of my "best practices" is to avoid driving side by side with another car or truck (especially), either left or on the right...so when passing I wait until the coast is totally clear such that I can pass the truck without delay....
I once saw a Saturn "sucked" into the draft of a semi and bounced off the truck's side and rickochet off the highway into a lake!
(think I'll start a thread of this...)

I agree with Trav. It's fantastic driving in Germany. People there get that if you obey the rules, then everybody benefits. None of the entitlement mentality that's over here.

What bugs me in CA is how everybody wants to drive in their own lane at virtually the same speed. In a 3 lane freeway, late at night and otherwise empty, you can be sure of finding 3 vehicles driving adjacent in all 3 lanes, all oblivious to you even when you switch to high beam and fog lights.

Once I had to stay behind for 5 minutes alternating lanes waiting for a gap to open up. When I got through and adjacent with the dumb [censored] in the middle lane, he tried to run me off the road.

Another time I overtook a slow [censored] hogging the fast lane, and he then aggressively accelerated behind me as if he was going to crash into me. This went on for a few miles until he came up alongside me and saw I had my phone taking a video of him.

Did the same to a souped up Honda Civic who again was hogging the fast lane, this time for several miles. At that point, these gangsters decided their honor had been hurt and started racing down the road at 100mph to get past me.

There have been days when I would like nothing better than to join the CHP or even better to be undercover, wait for 5 minutes behind these entitled idiots, then switch on my lights, and pull all 3 of the dumb [censored] off the road for a ticket and a lecture.

One time while getting on the freeway in our old 70's Suburban, a guy in a little Toyota truck decided to screw with my mom by speeding up or slowing down next to her to not let her merge onto the freeway... she decided to just go for it, and I've never seen a look like that guy had as he shot to another lane lol.

I could "live" with that...

More enforcement is the key. LEO's need to get in the traffic and write tickets, not sit on the side and go for revenue only.

And I thank the heavens that not everyone who wants to be a cop gets to be one...

Some of the worst drivers around here are the cops! 90MPH in the left lane, phone glued to the ear, tailgating (a foot from the bumper) anyone who doesn't move over, and occasionally poking at the car's data terminal...all normal.

Police cruisers should not be permitted to exceed 65MPH unless the strobes are on and the data terminals should not operate unless the transmission is in Park.
