Why lock the "gas too cheap" threads?

I think we could have an interesting discussion on the subject, but these threads keep getting locked. Why?

Why not PM a mod instead of calling them out in the open?

How would you like a public debate about how you do your job?

It might be nice forum programming to be able to PM *any* mod and let any of them choose to respond back to you.

If politics is a necessary part of the discussion, then so what? Why do we have to tippy-toe around everything? There's no reason we can't have an adult conversation about the subject without getting personal or nasty.

I agree, however, its up to teh board owner/mods as to whether they want such discussions on their board.

It's not our board and don't make the rules. I personally wouldn't mind having the discussion take place, but it apparently ain't happening here and I accept that.

How about you start a blog and make it a topic? Maybe mods would allow you to link to it. I dunno?

IMO this forum is a business and has a perfect right to make the rules. I would certainly agree that we do not need political discussion in BITOG. Crude oil and it's by-products and the availability of those products are certainly political in today's world. Therefore, let those who want to discuss these issues go to a proper POLIICAL forum of their choosing. FWIW-Oldtommy

I guess you haven't read most of the Toyota threads.

I'm not questioning whether or not threads should be monitored as they obviously should. I just don't understand why we can't have a respectable discussion on the subject.

Because time and time again it diverts into a polarizing, political, religious, or similar discussion which is specifically forbidden. As mods, we can't catch everything without users' help. In fact, sometimes we post in threads that are ultimately locked. But when things are specifically discussed in the rules, or are of topics well understood to create polarity, argument, etc., they can and will be nipped in the bud.

It would be great if magically the board could be run to everyones' liking all the time. Alas, it is run by people who do not operate boards as their day job, and do the best we can. The Notify button is a great tool for folks to flag things or get their say.

It's not so much the threads themselves, from what I have seen it ends up being the [censored] heads that start the personal attacking. It blows up from there, and POOF! ...The threadlocker cometh..

It will only become political if someone chooses to make it political. My thread - part 2 - was not political in it's intent. Scientific - not political!

I was hoping - as was suggested on Mori Base - someone would make a 'Part 3' in the series and keep it going, but I guess this is as good as it gets.

Some of the mods need to lighten up a bit. Honestly, you can turn any thread into a political discussion. Why not, as grampi suggested, give us a chance to have a scientific discussion about the problem.

If it goes sour, then lock it. Sure.

I don't know if I dare say anything about the gas price subject because I'm araid it'll lead to a locked thread, even though what I was gonna say isn't political at all.

In my experience, every BBS of every type has a section where off topic stuff is discussed. Even on two political boards I frequent there is a purposeful section for auto repair!

In my experience, if you take away the off topic stuff, or put clamps on it, you stagnate, as this board is already doing. the number of posters is inexorably shrinking to a select few of the thousands registered.

If this is a buisiness (and I dont see how, it does not seem to support clickthru) then you want the total number of users to remain static with little growth, but the number of new users to be high (meaning come on, spend, then fade away). thats how e-biz works for websites.

Since this is the 'general topic' forum, Id leave it alone. heavy moderation just makes you target for hostile takeover and does not prevent the internet xxxx-wads. But thats my opinion. what would I know.

In that case all of BITOG should be locked, according to the rules.
