Why is Royal Purple Love it or Hate it?

IMOP it’s a bad idea to have your oil purple, makes it hard to tell how dirty your oil is for one. But also the used oil analysis have never been impressive with it. I think the main thing is why buy a mediocre expensive synthetic oil when you can get a better oil like Amsoil.

I've only had RP in my motor for one week and 250 miles, so it's too soon to give a verdict, but here's my initial take -

So far my motor likes it, it's very smooth. My average fuel economy has gone up 1.4% and this is while going from Castrol Syntec 5w-40 with 4770 miles on it to 15w40 RP which is thicker cold and hot. My oil pressure is about 10 psi higher when first starting up. I wish I would have mixed a little 5w30 in as I would probably be seeing even better fuel savings. My daily 50 mile commute is always the same so I do feel confident it has helped, but I won't be sure until many more miles have gone by.

It has already turned to clear on the dipstick. The price is $1 or less than other synthetics here like Mobil or Castrol, so if the fuel savings continue, that initial price difference will pay for itself pretty quickly at today's gas prices.

Mobil 1 synthetic ATF does the same for Ford PS pumps, I've been using it for years. It almost completely eliminates the obnoxious noise they make.

The purple dye disappears relatively quickly and oil color is not a good indication of oil quality.

You shouldn't get any flack for giving props to Platinum. It is definitely one of the best oils on the market for price and performance. Heck, Pennzoil conventional is a top flight oil too. SOPUS knows how to do motor oil right.

You'll love it. My car turned out a stellar UOA with RP.

Simple.

Better oils out there for less $$ that are more available.

I don't need gimmicks like making oil purple to sell me oil.

As someone who has tried a LOT of oils (most with used oil analysis) I've never had an engine become "smoother" due to a different oil.

This is in I4, H4, I6, V6 and V8 motors over the years.

Most people who do "feel" something, it is more because they want to justify the $$ spent IMO.

I definitely agree with you here. At least 99.99% of the time.

So by your post, you definitely ran it and got a used oil analysis done, correct?

I believe RP made a big mistake by not offering competitive prices with other oils after becoming widely available in stores like Walmart and Autozone, who have now stopped selling it since no one was buying. A good opportunity missed IMO.

Oh so Royal Purple is so much better than Mobil 1, Amsoil, Pennzoil Platinum, Quaker State Synthetic, Castrol Syn and other oils.

No, If you read my post, you'll see I don't BUY gimmicks. If the oil is good, no need to make it purple. In fact, because it IS purple will make sure I'll never run it.

One of the dumbest marketing I've ever seen.

Again, I don't need to justify spending $$ for an oil that does nothing for me.

You will not be seeing me run RP and getting a used oil analysis.

I guess I'll miss out on the "magic" oil due to me being stubborn..

Take care, bill

C'mon Bill. You're usually much more sensible than this. What about Red oil? Or Green? Or Blue? A company does that to make their product stand out in some way. Bill, I'm with you. I want an oil that works and at the best price. That may or may not be Royal Purple, but they aren't the only company with an overzealous marketing campaign. And they aren't the worst oil out there either. You know you'd buy purple oil if it did the job for you. I'd buy Day-Glo orange oil if it did the job at the right price.

And as for the rest of us, me included, let's get a life, shall we and move on? If it weren't for a few tidbits of humor here and there, this thread would be a totally useless trip to la-la land.

But normally I'm not talking about Purple oil...
grin2.gif

Really if there was red oil (call it Racing Red oil) or green (good green lube) or Blue (Blue Bad A__ Oil) I still would not buy it.

Honest.

Same reason why I don't buy High Mileage oils. If I do not need it why put it in (like dye for color) and if I do not need it then I'm not a buyer. I'm not trying to be a jerk, it is just that I'm blown away with all these posts of "oh this oil is magic" "I went from 14 mpg to 22-24mpg with this oil" (*Actual* post here and NO ONE challenged his statement. Sure a syn oil is going to improve your MPG 8-10mpg....
smirk2.gif
) is getting out of hand.

This board NEEDS to be based on facts.

If that is the only way a oil mfg can make sales of their oil, I want nothing to do with it.

I buy oil on how it performs. Lucky for me in the *many* vehicles that I work on and have owned in the past, all the oils I've used and bought (most on sale) work.

Around here, it is HARDER to justify running 200k plus on normal under a buck oil than some of the la la statements like I've seen...

I agree Jim, I need to get a life and let the [censored] flow. Been here a long time before most and it is sad to see the board go from where it was to where it is...

And going.

Thanks for the post! Bill

So, you are admitting you have no idea how the oil would work for you? Everyone on this board "should" know that every application is different. Some oils work better than others in one application and in a different application, it switches. Unless you have ran something and compared it, saying it is subpar for you is ignorance. No one said RP would be better for you, or that you should try it. So why baselessly bash something?

Example. I have never used Redline. I would never buy a product with "red" in the name and the redline oils have some bad used oil analysis. Redline oils also have some great used oil analysis. But until I try Redline, I can't say whether or not Redline oils would be better or worse than what I have used. For me to make such a comment would be irresponsible on my part.

This is where I have a problem with your posts. You make this stand and try to take the high road and then bash a product with no first hand experience of your own. Where are the facts in that?
