Why is my engine smoother with dino?

I think you've got good point here...Look at sound rooms in high end audio stores which are meant to deflect soundwaves...I don't know exactly what it is on a molecular level that does this but there is something to it...Other materials can absorb soundwaves better and result in a lower quality listening experience.

This may be a similar case with synthetic and if it is then this just solidifies the different molecular structures in the two types of oils...Synthetic may be louder but not any worse on your engine even though our senses seem to indicate otherwise.
 
Could be that the fact that the molacules in conventional oil resonate less because they are less uniform. SO it might offer a natural buffer to acostic resonance. In a true synthetic all of the molcules are going to be almost completely uniform and when they resonate they are going to be sypathetic and will all transmit the sound! I am just guessing so talk amoungst yourself.
 
How about the A/RX cleaned the rings and is sealing better? To me when I put the A/RX in my toyota, the engine seemed smoother and quieter.Hard to say.

Fluid compressibility may be part of the issue. Conventional oils have unequal length hydrocarbon chains and the long, spidery chains of the viscosity improvers.

Synthetic base oils, by definition, have molecular chains built to a predetermined size and tend to be more uniform in size.

Regardless of where the answer lies, this engine noise issue with M1 synthetics is very real, as frequently reported here, by many of the members.
 
Yeah Mobil 1 makes the most noise of all.I stopped using it because of that.It may do no harm but i can't see using a oil that makes sooooooo much noise.To me that makes no sense when there are so many others to choose from that are quiet.

I am also very suspect of the claims "it runs much smoother!" "it has more pep!" However, I noticed that you are going to use a sound level meter to check the quietness of the engine. That is a great idea. Just make sure that you take the reading in the EXACT same place and have the same level of ambient noise. So you should take a reading with the engine off too. Cant wait to see the results.

Maybe the conventional oil is a bit thicker than the Mobil 1? Does not the Mobil 1 0W40 thin out quickly? Don't 5W30s thin out more than 10W30s?

The funniest thing was the reference to "crappy" Pennzoil Conventional 5w30.
 
I'm far from as knowledgeable as most people on this board. However, I've owned more cars than I can count in the last 33 years, and I've never heard of such a thing as a different brand of oil causing an engine to run "smoother". I'll wager that a thicker oil will make a worn engine run quieter, but I can't fathom how one brand of oil will make a noticeable difference from another of the same viscosity in an engine in good condition. I stick to one brand now, but I've used everything under the sun in the last 33 years, and haven't noticed a difference in noise. Am I just stupid, or simply deaf?

I believe GM is awaiting wider adoption of 'Fluid Transmission Highway' technology in order to replace the current and expensive copper hardwiring as a conduit for class II computer signals used to control the ECM (Engine Control Module), BCM (Body Control Module), DCM (Door...), LCM (Lighting...), etc. At that time it will then become possible to achieve significant changes in engine perfomance, optional accessory programing, Headlight color temperature etc. simply by changing your oil to one with different Fluid Transmission Highway characteristics.
It is rumored, but unconfirmed, that at that time GC will give the effect of 8000K HID lights, AMS oil will result in 5000K HID lights and Mobil 1 100W Halogen Headlights (misaligned). Use Pennzoil for that classic 'Carbide Lamp' look...

Question: Why is my engine smoother with dino?

Answer: Dino is real oil and better for your engine. It is chocked full of really good things that your engine will love. (Kinda like comparing a real burger to a veggie burger.)
 
Many dino's use Brightstock to thicken up their oils and Brightstock does have a slight dampening affect, but so does the modern polymer esters used in some formulations such as German and American Castrol.

Countershafts are solutions to harmonic resonances in odd firing V's and other engines. I do not see how a fluid can dampen out high amplitude mechanical impulses without affecting viscosity greatly.

Much engine noise is due to the bucket tappets, offset piston wrist pins, and lean burn fuel systems. These noises are at different frequencies and amplitudes than are power pulses.

I don't think think injectors are likely because a) I use FP60 pretty religiously and b) I don't see how an alleged injector problem would 'solve itself' instantly upon changing the oil.

BTW, when I say 'rougher', I don't mean that it's loping, idling funkily, or anything truly bad like that. It's just vibrating more.
