Why has the price of E-85 gone so high?

E-85 used to be priced at just over half the price of regular unleaded. Yesterday as I was driving by a gas station I noticed the price of E-85 is now 2.95, compared to 3.29 for regular unleaded. Who in their right mind is going to pay this much for E-85, and why has its price gone so high?

Ethanol was never cheaper than gasoline, heavy subsidies made it look like it is cheaper but in reality the taxpayer had to pay the difference.

I read somewhere that the subsidies are drying up and there is a heavy push from automakers and food producers to stop ethanol lobby from E15 becoming the new standard.

So I would say the subsidies are less, therefore the price at the pump has to be higher.

The commodity price of corn has gone from $3.60/bushel to $6.00/bushel in the past six months (with rumors of it going even higher in the next six months).

Really, we should stop making all that ethanol from the corn and just make some good whiskey.

One of these days we'll be saying "remember those cars made to run on that E-85 stuff."

There it is.

We've already done that. Remember "gasahol" in the late 70's?

I agree, plus you're getting less mpg for your dollar with E85. But I have to ask...are you sure it was $2.95? Maybe somebody's bright driving lights were blinding you.

Same difference here in KC, if you can even find it. In Mid-Missouri the Break Time quick shops sell it all the time. Last time I visited Mom in Jefferson City it was only 20¢ less.

Filled up tonight. Regular Unleaded, 2.87.9 . E85, 2.59.9. That's just about right.. about a 12% hit in fuel mileage, and between 11 and 12% less cost. Close enough for me. I run E85 all the time unless I can't find it, or am going to be walking if I don't get fuel.
