Why doesn't Mobil 1 make a 0-50?

And if the published HTHSV and VI spec's are correct, it is actually a bit lighter than M1 0W-40. Besides the massive ZDDP level would be corrosive for regular street use.

The only 0W-50's on the market that I know of are made by ENEOS and Sustina and as we have recently found out with Sustina it is not a 50wt oil at all but a light 40wt.

The price seems inline with the product.

Yep. Working for Auto Zone, I've learned that regular folks "non-BITOGers" are scared of 0W-xx oils.

I had to explain that Mobil 1 0w-40 wasn't a "zero weight" and "like water" to my wife's friend's boyfriend the other day.

He was good with "getting" the concept of the "winter" rating though, and then made a joke about why he now realized that running 20w-50 in his truck in the winter wasn't a great idea, LOL!

You should start every discussion with someone about viscosity with the question "Do you agree oil thins out as it gets hotter?" and go from there....

The question is, why on earth do they make a 0w50 at all? I can't imagine very many engines out there at all that need an oil of this viscosity. Their 0w40 is already a great oil, what benefit would it be to go any thicker than this??

I refuse to talk about lubricants with my wife's boyfriend. I mean...wife's friend's boyfriend.

I sort've wonder the same thing. Pennzoil makes GT Racing 25W50 and Valvoline makes VR1 50 and 60. Surely dedicated racing applications don't need a 0W oil?

Well, if a hot 40 turns into a 30 something, wouldn't a hot commercially viable / no-racing 50 turn into a 40 something?

-A

Yes, sometimes I am afraid to wear my Amsoil Racing shirt (especially in THIS town!), since it says in BIG bold letters on the back "Synthetic Lubricants"!
MANY just assume the WRONG thing.

Actually no one tries to make a 0W-XX racing oil, it's just a result of using the best high VI synthetic oil base stocks.
That said, the M1 0W-50 is not a heavy oil with it's HTHSV of 3.8cP and 189 VI. The only reason it's labelled as a 50wt oil is because it has an unusually high KV100 spec' relative to it HTHSV; the highest I've ever seen.
