Why does M1 EP cost more than regular M1?

What is the difference between Mobil 1® Extended Performance and the currently available Mobil 1?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance formulas are designed specifically for today's longer service intervals and are guaranteed to protect for up to 15,000 miles or one year.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance has a unique formulation with boosted level of protection and performance. These formulations with the Advanced SuperSyn System contain 50 percent more SuperSyn, 36 percent more anti-wear additives, and 37 percent more cleaning agents than the current Mobil 1.

It costs more because it has more "stuff" in it. Exactly what, I don't know (more anti-wear and more Super Syn?).
I don't care either way (EP vs Reg) but I have 24 qts of EP that I got for cheap, so I am using it.

The label tells you why it's more money.

Now from what I've read here, the EP is closest to the old SL Mobil-1. This new "regular" SM is not as robust as the old SL. When Mobil-1 made their EP claim that 50% more supersyn exists in it over the regular Mobil-1, they were comparing it to the SM.... not the old SL.

So why are some posters here going out of their way to find the non-EP M1? Is it just because it's a little cheaper?

How about M1 EP vs m1 t&S

I've been using the t&s because its 20.47/5qt
ep is $26??/5qt

In my truck of course...

Btw anyone else think mobil is confusing people
with their 3 different oil lines now ?

Here is that person!!

Let's see how confusing this all really is for me right now. Just got a new v8 titan. Using 5w30 currently and about to switch over to mobil1 but dont know if i should go with 5w30 regular SS (more readily available than the new TSUV 5w30 over here in TX) OR i should try to get the TSUV. The marketing label tells me to go ahead and get the TSUV, but the question is .... how does it measure up/compare to just the regular supersyn mobil1 oils???

Plus ill add in that many oil users also use 5w40 which was called TSUV also. From what i understand that the 5w40 had a more robust package then this supposedly new and improved 5w30 TSUV. It seems like Mobil 1 is trying to get me to stand at the store and stare at the bottles in the oil aisle for eternity, debating to myself which one should i choose.

It's like Mobil 1 has joined the flavor of the month club. It seems as though every few months they are changing their line up.

I don't believe that higher price of M1EP means that it "costs" more for Exxon to manufacture this product. It is priced to the consumer at a higher price point because their marketing department believes that the EP product can be differentiated from other M1 products AND the consumer will pay a higher price for it.

It probably does not cost any more for ExxonMobil to make M1EP vs. M1. I work in the chemical industry and the price-to-the-user is usually not driven by cost-to-produce.

Having said that....I am using the M1EP in my 5.3L Tahoe and I like it much better than the regular M1.

Are you basing that on performance or UOA?
..........

The M1EP is quieter and I could tell that the regular M1 would shear down after about 4K miles. I am about 4K into my second OCI with M1EP. I am going to let it go out to about 9K and get an OCI. No data yet.
