Why does Ford recommend synthetic blends?

If you get an oil change at our local Ford dealer you have to request Motorcraft oil if you want it. Their bulk oil is Formula Shell 5W-20.

And just for you that don't know it, when a new Ford is shipped from MI it is not filled with Motorcraft oil, it is filled with Formula Shell 5W-20. The packaged Motorcraft oil ( quarts, gallons, 55-gallon drums) that is sold at retail (i.e. Wal Mart, different parts stores, and Ford dealers) is made by ConocoPhillips.

I have on many occasions driven a newer style Corvette and while it is thrilling to have that much power under your foot it's nothing special IMO. *YAWN* Now don't go getting your nickers in a knot, just my experience is all.

Johnny, Why would their bulk be Formula Shell when they also carry MC? Wouldn't it make more sense to provide both? Not doubting you, just asking why...

I just checked in my FORD manual for my 2007 and it shows the section about oil and says it is 4.5 qts, then says Motorcraft Synthetic or Synthetic Blend 5W-20 oil, but then has an * when I look at the bottom, it very clearly states

*Ford does not require or recommend the use of synthetic or synthetic blend, it only need meet the Ford Spec Ms-xxxxx

I'm going to argue with you a little bit on that statement and say that the owner has a little power to do otherwise, or at least some of them do.
I worked at a dealership and when the oil distributor filled up the 1000 gallon bulk oil tank one day, I took the receipt to the bookkeeper. It was not Shell.

Interesting about the factory fill for Ford. I'm waiting for my car to be built, and was wondering what kind of oil it would be shipped with.

That part I will agree with. Menards now has Shell on sale for $1.58 a quart. With the recent upswing in crude prices, I don't think it will get any lower than that.

My local Ford dealer only has MC oils. The same where My sons Ford truck and Expedition are serviced in Gainesville, Fl.

Is this true of every FoMoCo factory, or just MI eg. Explorer made in Ky?

ConocoPhillips makes Motorcraft oil, quality product, less advertising, and great price.

It all depends on the Ford dealer. Our local uses bulk Formula Shell. I know Ford dealers that use bulk Quaker State, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Mobil, Chevron, and some no-name oils. There are a few who use bulk Motorcraft. All depends on each individual dealer. I know hundreds of GM dealers that do not use GM oil, same with Toyota dealers and Chrysler dealers.

So your more than likely correct about your dealer where you live in Kansas.

I will add that our local dealer has all of the Motorcraft oils in quarts and gallons.

Not sure about all FoMoCo factories, but Shell got the bulk contract about 3 or 4 years ago. Remember when the Ford oil was called Rotunda? That was also made by Conoco but the factory fill at that time was Texaco.
