I have been reading these posts for a long time and really appreciated the amount of knowlege here. This is my first post. Recently we purchased a new Mercury Sable and I went to Walmart and purchased some Motorcraft 5w20 syn blend oil. After reading the label at home I noticed that it meets Ford spec WSS-M2C929-A (Ford Spec for 5w30).Not the WSS--M2C930-A spec called for in the manual. Maybe the label is misprinted? I'm thinking about taking it back to Walmart. Maybe that is why it is only $12.50 for a five quart jug? Any info would be appreciated> Thanks

Congratulations on the Sable, and welcome to the forums. The WSS-M2C930-A specification is Ford's own name for the ILSAC GF-4 specification. Not too long ago, when I owned my Grand Marquis, I wrote to Kuwait Petroleum International Lubricants (UK) Ltd about which one of their products would be right for my vehicle. This was their reply:

Quote:
You are correct in the requirement for the Mercury Grand Marquis. Ford specification WSS-M2C930-A is basically Ford's brand name for the ILSAC GF-4 specification and the description of this is as follows ...

ILSAC Performance Standard for Passenger Car Engine Oils GF-4.

Manufacturers Association, representatives of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corpo-ration) and JAMA (Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association) to define the need, parameters, licensing and administration of lubricant specifications. Together with the Tripartite system (API, SAE and ASTM) they formed EOLCS, the Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System. ILSAC oils often carry the API Service Symbol (Donut) including the Energy Conserving designation and/or API Certification Mark (Starburst). The first ILSAC specification GF-1 is introduced in 1996 and similar to API: SH, followed by GF-2 in 1997 and GF-3 in 2001. ILSAC GF-4 was introduced in 2004 and similar to API: SM.

If the oil meets the GF-4 or API SM specification, I would imagine it would be alright to use.

The Label just doesn't make sense 5w20 motorcraft GF-4 SM that doesn't have the correct spec. I went to Walmart and all the Motorcraft has wrong spec. Double checked with Mobil 1 5w20 and Pennzoil 5W20 on shelf and both of them meet the correct spec (WSS-M2C930-A). Wonder how many of these containers are misprinted with the wrong spec? Steve's post has me wondering.

I looked on the 5 qt jug of Motorcraft 5W-20 I have and it had the wrong spec too.

However, I've got a 1 qt bottle of Motorcraft 5W-20 that has the correct spec.

Both were purchased recently at Wal-Mart.

Friend of mine has a five quart jug from Autozone and it is also mislabeled. Motorcraft would be the only ones who know if this is a misprint or hopefully not some counterfeit oil going around.

Falcon made a good point if it had the GF-4 rating and SM maybe it is ok? Would it impact any warranty claims?

As long as you keep your receipts, and the oil is API SM/ILSAC GF-4 rated, you should be fine. Doubt they'll ask for labels off a container that's been thrown away after use.

Is there a production date printed on the containers?

I buy in qts because I use 4 and use the old containers for the old oil. I bought 4 qts last night and they all say WSS-M2C930 so maybe it is just the 5 qt jugs.

I tried to post an image of the back of the jug but I was not successful. I am going to call Motorcraft on Monday to see if they know anything. Date code is almost impossible to read.

I have a 5qaurt jug 5w-20 from autozone and it has the 929 spec also , a quart of 5w30 i got from autozone earlier has the 929 spec, I would be interested in what you find out.

Just got off the phone with Ford (1-800-392-3673). Took about 5 minutes to talk to a real person. They said basically take it up with the store you purchased it at because they don't have any record of any misprints. Now who is telling the truth? One thing is for certain I will be returning the oil. Ford did verify they were a supplier to Walmart. It is probably just a misprint that they either won't admit or don't know about. I told them I was concerned about the slim possibility that this oil was counterfeit. They logged my concern and that was it.

Just checked our stash - 5 qt jugs of 5-20 from Wally's and 1 qt bottles of 5-30 from Advance Auto - they all say "..929" and GF-4.

I know we've used a pile of this oil in our vehicles so far with no problems.

Now that I took the Motorcraft back I wonder what brand and type anyone would recommend in a 5W20 for a 2008 Mercury Sable?

I think the Pennzoil conventional is only fifty cents more for a 5 qt jug at WalMart than the Motorcraft and Mobil Clean 5000 is less than both of them. Advance Auto right now is running a sale, 5 qts of Pennzoil conventional or Quaker State and a Purolator Plus L series filter for $14.99. The filters run $3.00+ so you are getting the oil cheaper than a 5 qt jug at Walmart if you look at it that way. I think most people would choose the Pennzoil of the two.

I don!t now if they are just playing it safe or what but on the Quaker State website they offer a 10 year 300,000 mile warranty but you have to have the oil changed every 4 months or 4,000 miles. Before it included changing your own oil but apparently not anymore. Pennzoil can go at least 5000 miles but I personally would want to do a used oil analysis before I went beyond that on any conventional oil no matter what the Maintenance Minder says.

I was at the local wallmart tonight and every 5qt. jug of 5w-20 had the 929 spec and every quart size bottle 5w-20 had the 930 spec, the 5w30 quarts had the proper 929 spec.this is not just wallmart also autozone where i bought oil recently.
conoco philips makes and bottles the oil for motorcraft,I guess the most likley cause is whoever prints the labels for conoco made an error and it wasnt caught. Most likley the correct oil is in the correct bottles and each would meet the proper spec. I hope

Thats what I was thinking also, but I was not willing to risk a new car's engine on it. I'm sure they make great oil and probably nothing would happen, but why worry.

It is probably just a misprint by Conoco Phillips when they made the bottles. They made the same type of mistake on their Trop Artic 5W30 oil. They put the 930 spec on that bottle, but it should have been 929.
