Why does CNN.com skip so much news now?

While I can't stand CNN, I've found that FOXnews and Bloomberg do the same thing. They skip the hard news, focus on what's not really news, then spend a lot of time on "analysis." I put analysis in quotes, as often it's NOT analysis, just people giving their opinion.

I can't watch any of them for more than a few minutes without wanting to throw something at the TV.

I long for the day when news was just that: NEWS. I can draw my own opinions and do my own analysis; I don't need someone to do it for me.

As to why - it is all about ratings. Half of the viewing audience is of below-average intelligence assuming a normal distribution. They don't want to see the hard news as they can't understand or comprehend it. It's so much easier to sit, watch, and agree with Alan Combs or Sean Hannity than it is to watch, understand, analyze, and come up with your own analysis and opinion.

Just my few cents worth.

I'm really talking about websites. I have not turned the TV on for about 2 weeks. I don't have time for people to read me their opinions and call it news.

Then you are doing the correct thing staying away for 98% of the TV.

Today's "journalists" are a TOTAL JOKE. They tow the line poorly. How they do it with a straight face and really beleive what they are "reporting" (repeating) is disgusting.

Last night the tv news had an exclusive interview with a 5th grader who discovered a teacher's gun. They also ran the numbers on how often the governor used the state helicopter on "frivolous" business.

I was thinking how lame both stories were, but they actually broke those stories and it beat reading the newspaper and repeating their news a day later. To get the kids exclusive the reporter probably burned up some shoe leather hanging out around the buses when the kids were dismissed, and asked, who saw the gun?

If you've got cable, just watch the BBC newscast. The limeys can be annoying, but they seem to have a better sense of what's actually worth reporting. The American news programs have so much fluff, that it really becomes annoying. I mean c'mon, how many times do I need to hear about who that guy with 8 kids is boinking this week, or what Oprah or Rosie, balloon boy, or Paris are up to that day. The world is a pretty big place and there's lots of real news to report. Small wonder that foreigners think we're so self absorbed when we're fed nothing but a diet of pablum on our news programs.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/

They're not "fluff free" either, but there's a lot more real news for those that want it.

Best,

I like our Canadian news best (we gave you Peter Jennings). It's not perfect but better than anything else available IMHO.

Some of our comedy shows are top notch as well. Rick Mercer, This Hour has 22 minutes, etc.

I live 30 miles from Detroit/Cleveland/Toledo and get to see all the offerings from our U.S. neighbors. The CBC, CTV and TVO are head and shoulders better than the US networks in authentic news and documentary offerings, PBS excepted.

They toe the official line beautifully. That's why I don't put any stock in what most of them say.

I got the CNN app for the iPhone as well as the Fox Business app, they're both nice, but neither aggregates the truly hard-hitting real news.

For that I strongly suggest doing keyword searches on Twitter, then look at the resulting info and/or links. I find that by getting news this way, it's more accurate & far quicker than any other means. Especially thru a phone, anytime, anywhere. This method un-tethers us not-so-young whipper-snappers from watching the news spoon-fed to us on TV every night.

A little off topic but why does the Weather Channel not show the weather anymore. Now their newest thing is to show movies. They had the Perfect Storm a few weeks back and now the movie Misery. I personally watch the Weather Channel to get the WEATHER!! Wish it was the same as it was in the 80's and 90's. Tom

Maybe this is what their demographics wants. My estimate is that about 80% of CNN.com items are soft news and the real news is covered in such a way as to appeal to the "human interest" aspect of it. Even then, stuff that appears on CNN.com usually is something that appeared on BBC a few days earlier.

As for TV, my news sources are the BBC news and sometimes the News Hour with Jim Lehrer .

CNN was the little news network before Wolf Blitzer gave realtime coverage from Bagdad. Now it's having a hard time going back the little news network.

It's like network broadcast entertainment. They matured into uselessness. Network news followed suit ..now the cable news.

You know, put the weather channel on now. Not much weather to talk about.

DirecTV has an option to see the 5 day forecast with the touch of the button. very nice. Don't have to wait for "locals on the 8's".

Of course, many local TV stations have dedicated digital TV stations that have nothing but weather, marginalizing the entire idea of TWC. John Coleman did good to get out when he did.

It's the morphing one needs to engage in to remain competitive. You may have to expend all of your fuel using after burners ..and end up on foot (reality shows - which are cheap). Your only consolation is that your competition is also as damaged and you're all going down in flames.

Not much of a victory being #1 at that point.

I stopped watching the news awhile ago. There are far better sources to obtain news. Can't stand any of them. How about Faux pushing for Palin already? Nice editing job.

If you really want to kill some brain cells, check out hln (formerly CNN 2). It's hour after hour of the most idiotic garbage imaginable. Nancy Grace is a [censored].
