Why are shooting topics locked so quickly?

Ironically, a filter bypass describes what happens with guns. Criminals bypass the filters that are meant to prevent them from obtaining a weapon.

If it's too hard to get a weapon legally, a criminal will seek to bypass the hassle and get a street gun.

Exactly this and it's a nod to both the moderation and user self-control that there is still some desire to hash things out. As amazing as it is to proselytise one's political views, I see how some imagine this is an "untapped market" that they can then "save" or convert to their POV. I don't see changing anyone's mind on a printed forum. In casual one-on-one conversation I can carry on a debate but a faceless forum invariably delves into chaos and name calling that noone learns from.

Trying to do so here is probably as effective as the street evangelist wearing the sandwich board that says the end is near or some other warning.

I'd like to think one is more likely influenced by someone they know, trust and respect.

Yet billions are spent every election cycle on ads, so maybe there is something to the siren call of a random stranger.

Most of us are adults, grampi, but it usually denigrates into something political in short order. I usually don't say too much in the media type shooting topics. I like my guns, and I know I don't have to preach to the choir, and there's no point in getting into a giant argument with those who disagree with me and run afoul of the rules.

I think there was an opt-in forum where members could discuss R/S/P topics some years ago, and tensions from there eventually spilled over into the main forum.

More than once, I have been disappointed when someone I respected for their knowledge of cars, engines, oils, chemistry, music, computers, etc., started airing their R/S/P opinions.

Like a lot of people have already said, the Internet is full of places where somebody can rant and have their views affirmed or challenged. This site remains interesting for the other things that happen here.

I've been here since 02 and in that time there hasn't been an RSP forum controlled by this board. There have been spinoffs but they all "get disappeared" under threats by the mods here, when it's observed that said forums denigrate into banned "alums" trashing the mods that banned them.

The thing I do not understand is that the NRA and related gun organizations are more "pro guns" than the average gun owner.

Are you a member? You know you can always do a background check on yourself 2-3 times a week if it makes you feel better. Or simply turn your firearms into your local police if you feel like it. But I doubt you are an NRA member to begin with. Apparently the average gun owner doesn't agree with your line of thinking. It is a waste of $$ and resources to check law abiding people when the same LE resources could easily identify gang members and career criminals and disarm them.

The police in every major city know who the bad guys are. But it is easier to check those who willingly fill out the check form. Then pat yourself on the back and say "I checked 1000 people today...don't you feel safer?"

I didn't see the thread, but I'd bet the religion of the shooter came up, someone blamed and used a cute nickname for the President. That breaks the rules and results in a locked thread.

It is after all a general topic area and we should be allowed to discuss pretty much anything...even politics...

Political and religious topics usually degrade into name calling, swearing, and things of that nature. That's exactly why they're not allowed. An adult conversation isn't going to happen.

That must be what I was thinking of. I remember references to something like "the other board" and tensions that carried over to this one.

THAT'S a reason to lock a topic...simply discussing it is not...and you can't assume that all political or religious conversations are going to turn vulgar...they may become heated at times, but that's to be expected, and there's nothing wrong with that so long as there's no name calling or swearing...

You're exaggerating...I've seen plenty of discussions in here that could be considered political or religious in nature remain civil...I guess it depends on your definition vulgar...in today's world people get offended by everything...
