Whole House Generator ?

It is difficult for me to comprehend why people insist on being able to run everything, as if nothing happened, in places where in reality, the extent of an outage is a few days or a week.

20 or 24kW?!? That’s insane. Everything can be run selectively when and as needed.

And if the reality is that there is real likelihood for long term outages (likes weeks to months), and you must maintain personal luxuries, I’d look at a diesel. In cases where infrastructure is gone, diesel will be easier to get, and save propane for other needs. BTDT.

I just run two electrical cords from my WEN portable, up through a second story window. One for lights and internet and one for the fridges and freezer. I have an indoor-safe propane heater for heat, if that’s a concern.

I tested the genny with my 10k window A/C unit, which worked well. I don’t typically lose power in the middle of summer, so I’m not sure how hot it would have to get before I actually used my genny for that service.

I'll jump in here:
We all share resources - if someone is selfish and ignorant (two usually go together) you will get ..... a note in you mailbox.

I see too much bad behavior out there - time to do some discipline. Obviously someone didnt teach the child.

You leave your neighbors mast grams if they don’t meet your societal requirements?

I agree 100%
I want to be able to be warm and have food and water and a few led lights.
I don't need to live in a Hilton costing huge $$$ forj the couple times I am without power. But thinking about it you could live in a hillton..cheaper than spending the HUGE $$$s for the switchgear and auto start Generator to power a whole house.

I have propane heat and 4KWH lithium batteries that supply light and communication. And after that a 1800 kw gas generator to recharge and supply the needed power.

I agree. With advice from others on this board. I'm doing it with a 3500( 4375 surge) generator. Gas heat and water. I toggle my furnace, water pump and cooktop.

We still had lights TV etc. in a 2400sqft home. All my lighting is LED so minimal load there.
Glad i took that advice. As we have been with out power for days at a time. Fuel consumpion was quite good with a smaller generator.

I would go 20Kw. And I do think that Kohler is better than Generac imho. And the 24 unit costs more as it is a liquid cooled engine.

I got by with portables selectively loading until I moved back to a real area.

Its pretty easy to do in the city, but harder in the country with well and sewer pumps.

It came down to needing to sustain a business office out of the house which means the 5 ton AC unit and all the pumps.

In reality I doubt I'll ever be more than 15 KW for a few minutes and then the whole thing drops to around 7-10 as the variable speed/capacity AC unit ramps down.

Don't be like my neighbor... As the rest of the neighborhood shivers in the dark, we see their house fully lit up, the decorative flood lights illuminating the exterior, water vapor coming from the furnace chimney... And then I see them drive down the street returning home! All that heat and light when they weren't even home!

We have a 4,000 watt portable generator to run the fridge, freezer, sump pump, and some lights. I can disconnect the gas furnace from the house power and pigtail it to the generator if it's an extended outage in the winter. I know this isn't what you're looking for, but it's proof that you don't need to run the entire house.

I’ve thought about a smaller whole house generator, but no more than I’d use it, the poor thing would be sitting out side. I know that’s what they’re made for, but I’ve also heard of the housings rusting out too.

Im leaning towards a tractor PTO generator or one of these for a few thousand more. .4 gallons an hour fuel consumption. 7 gallon tank. I’m just not sure on the power being clean like an inverted generator. https://m.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200681238_200681238?cm_mmc=Google-pla&utm_source=Google_PLA&utm_medium=Generators > Commercial Generators&utm_campaign=Kubota&utm_content=59892&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIh9Ldlt317gIVnx6tBh0WGg0zEAQYAyABEgKF2_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Yamaha made one that is basically just rebranded. Guys just put them on heavy duty wagon/ yard carts and pull them out when needed.

Right? If it smells like jealousy and looks like jealousy... well.... it’s jealousy. I’m planning on a few Tesla power walls and solar power, I guess I’ll be “that neighbor” in my nice warm house 🤷🏻‍♂️

And to be fair, those ushanka’s are amazing!

He certainly has the freedom to do what he wants. Doing whatever you want and flaunting your wealth can make you look like a jerk, however.

What are Mast Grams?

The mis-behaviors have to be VERY irritating.
I will speak to the offender on the street if I can get a hold of them, and I'm usually pretty cordial.
A recent example. was The 7 acre Lot next to me was subdivided and some guy built a house on the top of the hill on ledge.
They had to blast rock - and that cracked my foundation and broke some windows - but that's ANOTHER story.

Recently a second owner added ANOTHER attached garage, which is situated right at my property line.
They installed four super-bright LED Flood lights around the eaves. These floods were on ALL NIGHT starting at dusk, shiningright in through my bedroom window blinds, keeping me awake and unable to enjoy the night and natural moon light and stars. This was going on for a over a month.

My Wife and I discussed putting a note in their Mailbox - since no one has a landline of record where we could to place a call.
As I was composing the note in my head, a electrician came and a half hour later - the lights went off. Fantastic coincidence.

and - Hurrah! Finally !

Now to do something about the dog walkers allowing their mutts to defecate around my mailbox.
More selfish, lazy morons moving in from Massachusetts.

I just cannot comprehend how unaware people are of their transgressions and generally societally poor behavoir.

After the power outage in Texas we have decided to get a generator.

I've lived down here for 10 years we have never lost power for an extended period of time. Even during tornados we only lost power for a short period of time.

My needs are very simple.

Generator or Inverter generator (not sure if I need inverter or not).

Enough power to run a top freezer basic fridge, water heater (tankless gas), and a natural gas furnace, and maybe a couple lights or a radio.

Should be able to get it all setup for $1000, and stow it away in the garage for the next time I'll need it.

Give me your Social Security payout- take the kids out of Public School, and - you get NO unemployment insurance or medicare or medicaid.

See, there is rampant Socialism in America.

It's pretty funny; I am половина Россия, even though your note wasn't addressed to Me :)

Remeber the problem with getting Fuel - I wasn't able to get gasoline as all the pumps had no power with 20 miles

I can see your point on all those issues. But I don't see what that has to do with a guy heating his home and having the lights on in his house. The same lights that would be on if there was not an outage.

Only to those who are constantly comparing, worrying about what others have/do.

Besides , how does having lights on in your home flaunt wealth?
I have the lights and heat on in my home with a $400 generator. Led interior lights pull about 4-8 watts each, the generated is burning a minimum amount of fuel so lighting circuits have minimal draw, no savings.
If he has landscape lights those are frequently on a timer/photocell again most are led so low draw and more work to unhook and reprogram later.

Being prepared does not mean sitting in the dark with no heat, it's why you own a genset.
