I just realized that my new van that I will be picking up shortly (2016 Grand Caravan) has a cartridge oil filter.

Youtube videos show using a 24 mm socket to remove the top and a handful is a 15/16" socket.
Does anyone use a 15/16" successfully or is it good to get a 24mm? 6 point or 12 point ?

The last Dodge I owned was a 1964 . I guess a fellow should get one every 50 yrs or so.

I service our 2012. It's a 24mm, iirc.

I bought a 6 point socket. Unfortunately, I had to spend the extra on an impact socket but it's served the purpose well.

A tip, buy an extra housing cover. They don't really wear out if you take care of it, but it will break on a Sunday when the dealer isn't open.

Yep, I use a 24mm impact socket for mine. The air cleaner hose is a bit in the way on my 2013 Grand Caravan, so I pop the top off the air cleaner housing and swing the hose out of the way. Pop the plastic engine cover off too for a better view.

The thing I don't like about the cartridge oil filter on my 2013 is there is no positive stop to it when you thread/snug it back down. There is a torque spec for it, I just tighten it by hand and wince the whole time.

The GM top mount cartridges I've done had a definite stop to them.

I tighten it to spec every time. I don't trust my judgement. The spec doesn't seem as tight as it should be, but it's to spec.

Before I take the housing off the 1st time, I make a mark with white paint on the housing and the base - this let's me know where it was when I re-tighten it. (if it doesn't line up after tightening - you've done something wrong) It just needs to be on there snug, make sure the o-ring is well seated in it's groove on the housing.

My "work spouse" has a Dodge Journey with that engine. I do her oil changes and other routine maintenance. The cartridge filter on the Pentastar is very similar to the one on the 2012 Volvo that I recently traded in, although it used a different size socket. I had her buy the cheapest 1/2" drive, 24mm socket that she could find. I think it came from Autozone and it's a 12-point.

I don't worry about that filter housing loosening. The o-ring provides enough resistance that it seems very unlikely to back off. I just snug it down, maybe 20 ft-lbs at the most.

I'm cheap. I use a 15/16" socket that I already had in my toolbox to take off the cap. I can't even tell you how many points it has. I grabbed it and it works.

I'm using Wix filters from RockAuto, and get them for less than $5 a piece. Lots better (and cheaper) than a Puro Classic from W*M for around $12.

I don't know about the Pentastar, but your experience mirrors what I have seen on both of my Toyota's (4.6L & 2.5L), and on my prior VW Jetta (probably all their 1.9's that use this style, not the older ones). The o-ring has huge amounts of drag. I go until I feel the cannister seat, and then leave it be. 30 oil changes on my TDI and it never had an issue, plastic cap and all.

I've been tempted to seat it down, then turn out one turn or so. Then religously check and see if it loosens at all. On my Toyota's I can't do that, they are under the car; but on the VW I should have thought of it and done that (towards the end, when I knew I was getting close to the end of ownership

I'm cheap too and have a 15/16". It must fit "snug" ..... but it's good to know it fits.

I wonder if they make a spin-on filter adaptor ?? My 2007 Chev Uplander spin-on filters are like $3.00 @ Canadian

There's no spin on filter adapter, the filter housing/cooler design doesn't permit it.

I've used an adjustable wrench. Not a big deal. I don't even know what the torque spec is. But I have enough experince to not wreck stuff or leave it to loose.

I used the 24mm 6 point socket. Keep in mind the 2014-2015 Pentastar uses a different filter than the 2011-2013 Caravans. I've only changed the oil once on my 2015. I just snugged the filter housing, no need to go nuts on the torque.

Here's a video.

Use the 24MM socket that's a six point. My metric set I got from Sears a while back. The 2015 and + is a CH11665 FRAM # also
